Beer with breakfast

Post by Beer Terrorist » Thu Jun 12, 2008 1:33 pm

I'm off to Ascot next week with a few mates and am going to cook breakfast before we go. To keep it simple for there unsophisticated palates I'm going for a good old fry up: Eggs, bacon, sasauge, black pudding and fried bread (the meat coming for a local butcher). We'd like to get on the beer early so I was thinking of serving it with an IPA to help cut through any grease and hopefully work with any spices in the sasuages and black pudding.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for beer?

I would try a German weissbier like Weihenstephan. Nourishing and the carbonation will help cut through the grease. This is a popular breakfast beer in Bavaria, I thought this was a joke until I went to Munich and saw them in the mornings all eating veal sausages, mustard and a half-liter of the stuff. I would happily start every morning this way if I didnt have to drive so much.

I did consider that, especially as I was originally going to cook eggs benedict. I'm not sure how it would stand up with all that meat and fried bread, oppossed to creamy hollandaise and a fluffy muffin. I am tempted by a dunkelweizen, could well hold its own.

If you do end up doing eggs benedict, try making your own muffins, so much better than the ones from the supermarket. Here's an excellent recipe:

Looks good. I might leave it for the morning before the GBBF, that should give my enough time to talk them round to something a bit more adventurous

I'll remember that for Monday mornings when the depressing realisation of another monotonous week at work begins to set in

I read something there about a 'heavy-bottomed frying pan'. Any tips on where to buy one? I also need a heavy-bottomed skillet or such like. Tips on buying one appreciated. Thanks.

Now, these heavy bottoms...

Second hand shops and Jumble sales are your best bet for a cast iron skillit that won't break the bank!

I've always found Stella to be an acceptable breakfast brew. Especially when served from a brown-paper bag.

One of the Duvel brewers recommends using Duvel to make waffle batter. I tried it and it's superb.

You don't need much so naturally you can finish the bottle while you're eating.

With a bacon butty, a pint of a nice hoppy ordinary bitter is EVEN BETTER than a cup of tea, if you can imagine such a thing.

I noticed this too. When I was on holiday in Munich, we'd head to a bar or beer house for coffee first thing in the morning and there'd be blokes with full steins of beer. Absolutely mental ... can you imagine what the Daily Mail would say to that!

Some years ago we had a camping trip to Borrowdale and were washed out by high winds and pouring rain. Made it by bus to Penrith to catch the train. Unknown to us it was a market day (livestock) and some of the pubs were open. Full English, roaring fire, the morning papers and a couple of pints of Vaux at 0900 hrs. Wonderful!!!
