Have Muntons Found The Answer

Post by Normski » Thu Jul 16, 2009 2:47 pm

I’ve just been to my local Home Brew shop. While there I was shown a leaflet from Muntons that had a paragraph on the stuck fermentation some have experienced over the last couple of years. Muntons believe it's down to there not being enough zinc in some of the malt crops. They suggest putting in some yeast vit to add the zinc. Maybe that’s why my Smuggler stuck at 1020. But with my Wherry I've been adding yeast vit and it’s been fine. I hope this is the fix as I've been put off brewing some Muntons recently and would love to get the confidence back to brew some of there expensive ales again. I've just had a quick look on the Muntons website and can’t see anything about it.

I brewed a Wherry there about 2 weeks ago (Still in the FV) and its got down to 1.010!!
I didnt use any Yeast vit, all I did was rehydrate the included yeast (in sterile water at about 29-30 degrees) about half an hour before pitching and gave the wort a good bashing for about 20-30 minutes when I pitched to aerate it lots. It was fermenting away after about 3 hours!!
Maybe they have sorted it!! =D>

I was worried it would stick after reading all the horror stories. I was on Hols while it was fermenting, dreading I'd come home to a fermenter of sweet unfermented beer, But it seamed to ferment our fine. Prob bottle at the weekend.

Hi
I complained to muntons that two kits stopped before full frementation. They sent me two complimentary kits and blamed it on the zinc in the malt. The new kits worked perfectly just going below 1014 in three days but no lower. The imperial stout was really impressive. I have the email somewhere i could find it if you like.

I tried yeastvit in at least two of my kits but it made no difference. I think if it's going to stick, there isn't much you can do about it. Rousing and/or pitching more yeast may help drop a point or two. I don't want to sound negative, but I have to say that Muntons have tried blaming just about everything except their manufacturing process.

Seem like they may have turned the corner and finally sorted this out, i doubt their claims about the zinc though since the kits used to stick regardless of nutrient addition by many people. I think its more likely they have changed something about the process but are reluctant to say so preferring to blame it on someone/something else ie the malt.

I agree Ditch. I was surprised that we hadn’t heard anything on here, that’s why I thought I'd post it. I’m hopeful, but still a bit suspicious. Time will tell. P.S. I put a stout on with medium spraymalt this afternoon. Cheers Norm

I have never had a stuck ferment yet with muntons maybe I have just been lucky, I have 2 wherry kits to do and 2 masterclass irish stout so we will see if they ferment out properly.

Hi Ditch
Its not just any old stout, it's a Coopers. And it's just stopped blowing froth out of the airlock. And looking & smelling it's usual healthy self.
I thought I'd run out of the good stuff, so had to get a brew going quick. But found I had a few bottles for emergencies in a cupboard Phew...
Cheers

I've tried a couple of Muntons kits and they were both rubbish, the "zinc" explanation is horseshit and insulting to anyone with half a brain

From what I've read it seems that traces of zinc and magnesium are essential to healthy yeast reproduction, so they might just have hit the nail on the head.
