Ale for a lager drinker
Ale for a lager drinker
Hi,
I'm a big lager fan but want to have a go at an ale. Can anyone recomend one that would suit my tastes?
Thanks.

If you're a lager man, I guess you're not going to want anything too muddy, so you could try Brupaks Linthwaite light. I'm supping that at the moment - it's got a nice hoppy almost citrusy taste to it and is very nice straight out the fridge, even though real ales ought really to be cellar temp IMHO. Alternatively try a steam beer, which is like a cross between a lager and a bitter - not brewed it, but have drunk it in the US and it's very pleasant. Enjoy.
Re: Ale for a lager drinker
Do what I'm doing raid asda and tescos special offers section on bottled beers and give them a go!! Then search on here for comments on similar tasting kits ..
I would have never tried speckled hen or old peculiar if I hadnt seen them being mentioned here.
But considering I've never drunk anything apart from lager beside the very odd smithwicks or bass (you could prob count the times on your fingers) until I joined this site and tried brewing, I have definitely been enjoying my ditch's stout !!! and would recommend it to anyone .

Re: Ale for a lager drinker
Homebrewing has turned me from a lager drinker to a bitter drinker. I tried Wherry first of all and then Admirals Reserve. At first the Admirals Reserve was too hoppy for me but I grew to love it. I now add hops to every bitter kit I brew.
One thing I would recommend is to make it fizzy. I condition in bottles and add 130grams of sugar to prime. When I do brew lagers I add 160grams of sugar to prime - 85grams is not enough for me.

Re: Ale for a lager drinker
like you im a lager drinker after bitters made me ill
having had 2 kits fail on the lager side and not wanting to stray to far into the dark side again
ive started to look around at other brews
this place has opened my eyes
ive even grown a beard
ive looked at the pale ale route from a kit
just seen asda had bottled tribute in stock the draught is necter
just had three bottles of the Wychcraft(thrice hopped) blonde beer which was quite nice straight from the fridge
might have been nicer left to warm up a touch
so you ve got pale ale ,wheat beers, blonde beers and the bruferm range to look at

I've converted people by getting them to try Summer Lightning! There are Extract and AG clone recipes available. Its a very light beer; personally i love it (bit drinkable for a 5.0% ale though)! Depends whether you usually drink the lower strength lagers (ie the Australian one, the Danish one brewed in Northampton etc) or the higher volume ones with some flavour! If its the former, i would say that ale has too much flavour for you!

Before I started brewing it was 12 cans of Carlsberg.
Stuff makes me gag now.

I'm still really a lager drinker but this stuff is great.

Lads, Lager rocks, at least in Germany it does....not sure about the pish that gets sold as Lager elsewhere, but in my opinion, if you go back to the roots, Urquell, Budwar etc, you're drinking some of the best cleanest tasting crispest beers in the world.
