how to transport homebrew

Post by pimp.daddyo » Wed Aug 12, 2009 7:54 pm

hi im new to all this so please be gentle

i've recently made a batch of youngs definative bitter , all has gone well so far apart from it being a bit cloudy but its in the fridge now so hopefull it will settle down soon .

i made this batch up purely as a trial to see how good the kits were and we plan to drink it at a festival next weekend ( 21st aug )

is there any way of transporting it for about an hour in the back of a car without mixing up the sediment ? i bottled it in 2 liter pop bottles but want to try and transfer it so i can minimise the damaged done to it in transit .

could i syphon it back into a sterilised brewing barrel ? the beer is going to be drank pretty quickly anyway so i dont need to worry about it lasting too long i just need to find a way of transporting it and it still being drinkable at the other end

Hi, I had a similar problem I wanted to take some of my brew on holiday with me to Wales, the solution I used was to get a couple of the cardboard wine carriers they give away free in supermarkets and use them. I had pint bottles so wrapped some paper round each one for a snug fit.

I then placed them on the floor behind the driver and passenger seats which is roughly the middle of the car where there is less bounce. Drank them the same night (not all of them!), not cloudy at all, no problem.

I suppose it all depends on how many you are taking and how long they have been in the bottle.

planning on taking 12 x 2 litre bottles , i might try it in the car but im quite scarred of getting to the festival and having messed up dirty beer .

if i syphon them into a plastic barrel with a tap would that travel ok ? that way im getting rid of the sediment at the bottom of the 2 liter bottles and then i'll have a barrel full of beer with no sediment to get churned about .

i understand it will not be as good as it would be in the bottles but its only for festival fun and not going to last very long anyway

if i transfered it into the barrel just before i left for the festival it would have a maximum of 3 hours in the barrel and a maximum of 1 hour driving will it still be drinkable ?

I have transported bottles many times. The best method I have found is to get the beer as cold as you can transfer it to another bottle or vessel of your choice being as gentle as possible. Leave as little head space as possible. You should be able to avoid all the sediment and keep plenty of carbonation. If kept cold I have managed days like this. A few hours should be no problem. Keep the motion to a minimum and you will be fine.
