Using finings after 1st fermentation

Post by colgilbec » Wed Aug 12, 2009 11:50 pm

Hi,
Please treat me gently on this first post as i think i have found most answers i have queries for on this excellent local site.
Using a Muntons Gold old english bitter kit i am at the stage that 1st fermentation is complete, hydrometer level is good and looking to transfer to another vessel to add sugars for 2nd fermentation then into bottles.
I was thinking of adding finings in the primary vessel before transfering to second vessel to ensure a clearer beer or would it be easier to do this in the second vessel.
My main concern is if i use finings +priming sugar in the second vessel will there still be enough yeast going into the bottles to create the 2nd fermentation.
Also there is still a slight ring of bubbles on top of beer containing yeast/dross do i just leave this or stir to help it sink .
Maybe jusy leave finings out?.
Any info would be really helpful thanks.
If you tie a piece of buttered toast to a cats back and drop it from a building, it hovers just above the ground rotaing slowly.

When using finings, I always stir it gently into the contents of the FV and leave it a day to drop. Never had a problem with secondary fermentation after doing it this way.

to be honest, in kit brewing, I've never found need to use finings - they always clear for me with proper conditioning. Saying that, I dont use finings for extract brews either!
