Hi all, After 2 AG brews (Hobgoblin Clone, Entire Stout) under my belt and after recently getting a larder fridge I am thinking of brewing a Lager for brew number 3

And I was wondering if anyone can recommend a simple Lager recipe

I am hoping to buy all the malts etc from
http://www.barleybottom.com/ as the malts etc & service have been faultless for my 1st & 2nd brews

.
Cheers DC

Mrs H's lager/pilsner recipes. 5 gallon, 78% effiency, og 1042
Lager Malt 2816g
British Caramalt 402g
Flaked Maize 402g
Brewing Sugar 402g
Saaz Hops 20 Bittering units, added at start of the boil.
Estimated OG 1042
Saflager yeast
To make the Pilsner style Lager, I replace the Lager Malt with Pilsner Malt and the British Caramalt with Carapils malt. I use the same amount as shown in the recipe.

The lager i brew for the wife is based on Horden Hillbillys recipe,
this is what i brew.
3000g Lager Malt
400g Flaked Maize
400g Caramalt
400g Cane Sugar (added to boiler)
35g Crystal hops @ 60 mins AA 4.9%
5g Crystal hops @ 10 mins AA 4.9%
Hordens original recipe was for Saaz hops but my wife prefers it with the Crystal.
Hope this gives you a starting point.

Hi Lads, Thanks for the swift & some what synchronized replies

I will have a look on
http://www.barleybottom.com/ and see if Paul has the ingredients you guys have posted. Just one more thing are there any set processes for brewing Lager

ie correct temperature to ferment at

I have heard that Lager needs to be fermented at a colder temperature than say a Real Ale

Anyone know of a step by step for Lager brewing ? I am dying to try this new fermenting fridge out
Cheers DC

If you use Saflager like I do, it is recommended to ferment at 9c-15c, ideally 12c. I normally brew Mrs H's lagers during the winter months to achieve the lower temp as I don't have a fermenting fridge.
Saflager info link.

Yeah, unless you make up a huge starter you are going to end up with banana beer

thats what i ended up with the first time i used it, when i repitched onto the yeast cake though it was a different story, the resulting beer was nice and clean.

Personally i think a 2L culture of lager yeast in 46 Litres of lager is underpitching, you might get away with 2-3L of starter in 23Ls though.
Or you could do what i did and use the yeast pack at the bottom of the fermenter more than once either by washing it or by dumping more wort straight on top of it.

wow that is one large starter? so for say 46l brew you would need 6 litre starter am gonna use beer engine
would you keep all ingredents the same but put finished brew at 40 then add the 6l starter

No, allow the yeast to settle in the starter, pour off the liquid and add the yeast to the FV
