I made a Wherry kit using Safale S-04, bottled it 5 weeks ago and it still hasn't cleared. I have done this before and it cleared in a week. Some are conditioning in the fridge and some are not and they are the same. I've taken one out of the fridge hoping it was chill haze but it's not.
The bottles don't even appear to be clearing at the very top which I usually notice clears first. I've tried a sample and there is no infection - it just tastes like it needs to clear.
Can anyone advise what has happened? When should I consider ditching?
Wherry not clearing after 5 weeks
Re: Wherry not clearing after 5 weeks
Hi will keep my eye on this post as i have a brew thats been bottled 3 weeks and just a slight clearing from the top. , I used the yeast supplied. SO4 allways clears quick with other brews I did.
Re: Wherry not clearing after 5 weeks
Mine is wherry, with S04, been conditioning for about 3 weeks now in cold (following week in warm)
Clearing pretty well - very slight haze.
As per other post though, I'm convinced this isn't sediment cloudyness - more a haze - proteins?

My last Wherry took 7 weeks to fall bright. I've recently been doing York Brewery kits and they clear in about 7 days. I know which I'll be doing in future.

Both made in exactly the same factory by the same companygratefuldave54 wrote:My last Wherry took 7 weeks to fall bright. I've recently been doing York Brewery kits and they clear in about 7 days. I know which I'll be doing in future.

It's strange. I bottled a Geordie Bitter (with Crystal Malt and Fuggles) on Wednesday and the top 1cm is perfectly clear and you can see all the yeast like smoke in the bottles.
The Wherry is just cloudy so maybe it is proteins - but I did try a bottle and it tasted yeasty. I'm away for 10 days so if it hasn't cleared by then I'll take it up with Muntons. By then my rolling stock will have caught up so I'll have something to drink - I won't be so annoyed!

Re: Wherry not clearing after 5 weeks
After primary fermentation has finished, how long do you leave leave the brew in the FV i.e do you bottle/keg staight after? If so, it may be an idea to leave the brew in the FV for a 2 to 3 days after primary fermentation has finished. It may also be an idea to lower the temparature as well, as both help with clarity.sonicated wrote:I made a Wherry kit using Safale S-04, bottled it 5 weeks ago and it still hasn't cleared. I did an extract London Pride with Safe04 & due to time restrictions, I left the brew in the FV for a week after primary fermentation had finished. It's been in the Corny for a week now & it's already clear as a bell.
For what it's worth, Wherry is well known for not clearing quickly.
Fermenting - Nothing
Conditioning - Nothing
Drinking - Tea
Planning - Everything, if only I had the time ... !!
