Brewday 29th Aug - APA

Post by booldawg » Sat Aug 29, 2009 10:25 am

Its 10.15am and the boils underway, the house is all mine and its time to kick back for a bit and have a look on Jims. Is it too early to crack the top off a bottle ?

This is my 1st APA and I was met by the lovely citrus aroma when I cut the Amarillo and Cascade foil bags open. I've not used anything other than traditional English hops and maybe a bit of Hallertau before.

Looking for around 1053 and about 40 IBUs. As advised most the bittering will come in late at 15 mins before switch off. I'll steep 20g of each hop after 80C on the chill. US-05 yeast.

Its a nice sunny day and the boilers out on the patio may have to have music blaring!

It was a good example of a rhetorical question! I only really have a 6% Old Ale to hand. Glad I only have the run-off to FV left as I feel I'd start 'forgetting' things.

23L OG 1054

4800g Pale Malt
380g Carapils
41g Chocolate Malt
Amarillo 90 mins - 10 IBU
Cascade 90 mins - 10 IBU
Amarillo 15 mins - 12 IBU
Cascade 15 mins - 12 IBU
Amarillo & Cascade, 20g of each, steeped once temp had dropped to 80C
US05 yeast

Mashed at 67C for 90 mins.

I was advised to use Crystal to give more body and maybe drop the IBUs to mid/late 30s. As I plan to brew another I stuck to the original so I have a comparison.

Thanks for the recipe
Wow thats some flavour, i may adjust it it suit my lower ABV brews, as i never brew above 4%
just because i like to have a fair few in a night so i prefer them lower so i can drink more :D
