small Yeast packet wont 'start'

Post by Beer Belly » Sun Aug 30, 2009 5:55 pm

Im using a kit with a tin and a small packet of yeast, Ive put the yeast from the small packet into approx. 150ml of pre boiled water cooled to about 25 degC and ive left it for around 15 mins bit it still hasn't went foamy (if you know what I mean).
Does it need to be foamy before I add it to my wort?

thanks for any help

ps; this is my first homebrew.

You may not see any foam..................this is more likely if the yeast has sugar to feed on. As long as it has rehydrated stir it into the brew and you should see some action in 6 to 24 hours.

Also, if for some reason nothing happens, don't worry, yeast might be no good. If so, get another sachet and sprinkle it on. If you need to ask anything else it's a good idea ,to tell us what kit you're doing. Good luck .

ok thanks. It still looks cloudy so i'll just stir it in and see what happens.

Im using BREWFERM PILS kit: http://www.hopandgrape.co.uk/catalog/de ... BRE2145874

I was thinking of leaving it to ferment on top of the boiler which my temperature gauge say is about 27deg C. Is that too warm or should I put it in the spare room which is around the 18 - 21 deg C range?

thanks again
