Treatments: Brain ache :(

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Treatments: Brain ache :(

Post by chris_reboot » Thu Sep 17, 2009 2:13 pm

Just about getting the concepts of water treatment, but need some help please!
My water is very soft (25 Ca) and I have been advised therefore the only water treatment I need is DLS (i.e. no CRS)
My questions are:

A) is that correct?

B) I read that a bitter profile wants about 150 Ca, so I need to add 125, which is about 0.7g per litre of DLS according to Brupak's site(?)

C) what is in DLS, and do I need to worry about other chemicals like Mg? IS DLS alone all I need (see A))

D) should I be measuring pH as well as a double check? I dont have any kit for that at the minute - what's best, salifert?

Thanks from a brain-aching brewer!

So far using the GW Water calc http://www.jimsbeerkit.co.uk/water/water.html and separate treatments my Mash pH's have been pretty much on target, all you need is a good water report with the CaCO3 etc and you can pick and choose your volume and Beer styles.
