I've learned the hard way that Woodforde's Wherry is prone to "stalling" at fermentation, just started a Muntons Gold, anything I should be looking out for?
Need to get these kits under my belt before progressing to all grain...
Muntons Gold help
Re: Muntons Gold help
I started my first brew for over 5yrs - a Muntons gold kit and it also stuck (they used to be really good kits). After trying to kickstart with nutrients and a warmer environment it hardly fermented at all. Now I've racked to a secondary FV, pitched new yeast and there's a nice foamy head on this morning. Hopefully that'll get it going again and I can bottle it soon.
I'd say make sure that you aerate the wort before pitching, try a starter culture instead of putting in dry yeast from the packet - or maybe replace the yeast altogether. Then it's down to the god of yeast as to whether it'll ferment down to 1.014 or not....

Re: Muntons Gold help
Thanks BrewerBob, I never thought of starting the yeast off first, I do it when making bread so seems sensible with beer.
Re: Muntons Gold help
I've not had a problem with either Munton's or Woodforde's but there have been so many warnings on the MB that I've started using my own yeast with them to make sure of avoiding any problems.
Re: Muntons Gold help
Interestingly, after two days loads of foam but still no activity in the bubbler...
Re: Muntons Gold help
Are you 100% sure there isn't a leak somewhere? Foam usually = CO2 production... If all else fails re-pitch with some new yeast, perhaps add a little nutrients if you have them.
Re: Muntons Gold help
Thanks BrewerBob, would you believe, tightened the lid, couldn't be more than 10th of a turn, bubbling like a cow's intestine. Seal was vaselined, lid was tight, just that extra turn.
Looks like I have a lot to learn yet...
