Nelson's Revenge Prime with Sugar or Spray Malt ?

Post by FATTYTRIATHLETE » Wed Sep 23, 2009 9:42 pm

For priming the bottles I am thinking of doing 1/2 white sugar and 1/2 Dark brown sugar but wondering if it will be better with Spray or some sugar / some spay. If so, do I use light, medium or dark ?

Any other tips for this brew would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

To be honest the small amount you use for priming I am not sure it will make much difference, unless you use something very strongly flavoured.

If you're asking, go for spraymalt, it's superior. People will tell you that there is no difference for priming, but honestly the mouthfeel is softer with all malt, I find at least. Makes a smoother overall beer.

Good point but why risk ruining a full bag of spray malt just for say the 100g needed to prime your bottles? You would then need to store the rest, away from moisture and away from harm.

I find the plastic take away trays, you can get them in most crap shops (shops that sell crap) and in the fridge they keep the opened malt and spraymalt fine.

I have used dextrose, sucrose and spray malt on various occasions to bottle condition beer and my experience is that you might as well use the good old table sugar (sucrose) because with the quantities that are needed in a 5 or 6 gallon batch you really aren't going to notice a difference. My humble opinion of course.

Yep I agree. You would need a pretty sensitive palette to detect 80-100gms of sugar (or the byproducts of) in a 5 gallon brew and I would have said even then you would need two identical brews one primed with sm and the other with sugar side by side to be able to tell the difference. IMHO

I find the carbonation is softer with spraymalt.

Until it's finished. :D

Idealy when you have at least 2 consecutive days with the same gravity reading.

That's probably as spraymalt is not 100% fermentable like table sugar so there is less carbonation.
