Through a mild darkly

Post by flything » Fri Sep 25, 2009 11:26 pm

Just had a very smooth brewing session, started at 5, all done and cleaned up by 9:30, 1hr mashes and boils are the future (maybe). Recipe taken from Brewing Classic Styles.

Recipe: Through a Mild darkly
Style: Mild
TYPE: All Grain

Recipe Specifications
--------------------------
Batch Size: 23.00 L
Boil Size: 29.43 L
Estimated OG: 1.038 SG
Estimated Color: 30.2 EBC
Estimated IBU: 17.1 IBU
Brewhouse Efficiency: 75.00 %
Boil Time: 90 Minutes

Ingredients:
------------
Amount Item Type % or IBU
3.17 kg Pale Malt, Maris Otter (5.0 EBC) Grain 84.76 %
0.23 kg Caramel/Crystal Malt - 25L (50.0 EBC) Grain 6.15 %
0.17 kg Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L (120.0 EBC) Grain 4.55 %
0.11 kg Chocolate Malt (500.0 EBC) Grain 2.94 %
0.06 kg Black (Patent) Malt (985.0 EBC) Grain 1.60 %
31.50 gm Goldings, East Kent 4.6 [4.60 %] (60 min)Hops 17.1 IBU
1 Pkgs SafAle English Ale (DCL Yeast #S-04) Yeast-Ale

Mashed at 68c for an hour, then batch sparged, boiled for an hour. Lobbed in some rehydrated irish moss, boiled a bit more, cooled, pitched rehydrated yeast.

Couldn't get the last litre out of the boiler because the hop filter gummed up (rolled up splatter guard) so efficiency was down to 73.8% (oh no!), but 22l of Mild will do to be honest, wort was really clear even though it's a dark beer, tasted really nice, looking forward to trying this and at 3.5% ish shouldn't be too long before I do. Sorry no pics this time.

Something to do with http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0405296/ ? Probably the most annoying film I've ever watched!
Hope the beers a good one :)

It's Just another play on words in this tradition http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Through_a_Glass_Darkly

Not seen the film but the book 'A Scanner Darkly' is a work of art.

Ahh, OK
The Story Line of the film is probably good and twisted, but its a shame they used bullsh!t visual effects. It left me feeling disorientated.
