Too much sugar ?

Post by Nobby Novice » Thu Oct 01, 2009 9:39 am

I have cocked up. I brewed one tin of a two tin Woodefords Admirals reserve. When I came to bottle the 20 pints I did not halve the amount of sugar when priming the bottles by way of my vessel and bottle stick. When I opened a bottle last night I had a gushing of beer and bubbles all over the place. The next bottle I tried to release the pressure slowly with a bottle opener, which only drew all the sediment to the top making the beer cloudy and undrinkable. I realise my mistake now. I have read also the folly of making two can kits in half quantities !
Is it possible that I could open the bottles and let the contents go back into the fv to settle and then rebottle without any more priming sugar ?

I have over primed a couple of experimental brews (deliberately). These have only been a couple of bottles though and not a large brew. On those occasions I have super chilled and opened the bottles into a large jug with as much care as possible. It will cloud up with yeast as you say but can be placed in the fridge to settle again. As it is so fizzy, by keeping it cold it is still drinkable when settled .

I have never tried the bulk opening idea back into a bin and then re bottle. I reckon it should work (nothing to lose) remember to sanitise, including the outside of your bottles, hands and other equipment. Godd luck. Keep us posted.

On the subject of priming...

I have a little plastic teaspoon measuring tool which i intend to use when i prime and bottle my very first batch on sunday. Muntons Pilsner.
Would adding a teaspoon to each 500ml bottle be too much and ruin my brew? (the instructions recommend, half teaspoon, but this is difficult to measure)

Or do other people use a teaspoon rather than half a teaspoon?

I intend to store the bottles after sealing at room temp for a few days, then keep cool/cold for 3 weeks in my garage....

What do you pro's think??!!! :?:

Kippa, if you are making lager you probably want it pretty fizzy. It is far better to dissolve the whole amount of priming sugar (about 120 to 150g for lager) in about 150ml of boiling water, cool and gently mix with the brew before bottling. If you are using platic PET bottles (lemonade) they will stand a lot of pressure. Have a look at a recent post for more ideas. ........viewtopic.php?f=13&t=26858

You can chill the heck out of the bottles to calm them or, if you are careful, it is possible to ease up the top of a crown cork, relieve a bit of pressure and then reseal it. Some bottle openers are better than others for this. The seal will never be as good so it is not recommended for long term storage but you might find you can do this, wait a day or two for it to settle down then open the beer proper. I learned this many years ago when I primed with a full heaped teaspoon per bottle on a not quite finished beer. I could have sold them as fire extinguishers....

cheers trucker,
so if i do this, should i syphon my pilsner out into another vessel (with the sugar solution (muntons enhancer)) already in the second vessel?
if i did this i could then bottle from this bucket using my new bottlestick thingy couldnt i?
Or is this messing with the beer too much mate?

Exactly as you say.................priming solution in another bucket and run the beer into it to mix it (avoid splashing and aeration) Bottle from there using your bottling stick (great bit of kit) You can even mix the priming solution GENTLY into the 1st FV. Let it rest for an hour just in case you disturbed the sediment, then bottle from there, I do this as a short cut a lot of the time when I don't have a spare bucket.

Interesting...

This 1st FV method work okay then? Was about to buy additional equipment, but you may have saved me a little bit
