brewers choice kit

Post by pas8280 » Fri Oct 09, 2009 6:49 pm

My Brewers choice Kit says that i should transfer to a second fv after fermentation stops (5 to 7 days) stir gently then leave for a further two days before bottling what does this do ? should i not leave it as it is for extra 2 days after fermentation finished then transfer to a second bin to bottle, am i missing something ?

This is a technique that some some advocate. I've done a few of these kits and never bothered.

All mine have turned out as very nice beer. I do leave all my beers in the FV for two weeks. Then they are transferred to a bottling bin (just an FV with a Little Botlter fitted) and bottled. There have been many discussions about the wrongs/rights of the method, and most say it's not worth the effort - introducing just another avenue of oxidation if your'e not careful - something you want to avoid...

Once the yeast head has gone it'll lose its protection, so I wouldn't like to chance it with just a tea towel. If you have the lid just put that on. If not, just bottle or keg when its fully fermented.

Yes, pretty much. Put the sanitised lid on (I just leave a little bit unsnapped, but I keep my FV in a fridge that's rarely opened). When you're ready, if you have another bin, sanitise it, put the priming sugar in there and rack off into - the idea being that the sugars will be mixed evenly. Then bottle from there. If you don't have taps and Little Bottleers, I highly recommend them, they make life so much easier than syphoning IMHO.

If you don't have another bin you can put the priming sugar in the FV and give it a gentle stir (avoid frothing it up). Leave it a while to mix in, and then bottle.
