Re: brown malt in a bitter
A small amount of a roasted grain can add a nice touch of complexity in a low grav bitter. I have an ordinary bitter recipe (S.G. 1.037) that I wasn't real happy with until I added four ounces; three gallon batch, of victory malt.
I'm just here for the beer.

done. 5% brown malt in a bitter. It's in the fermenter now. Color is perfect. I'll post back for anyone that might be interested.

It's turned out to be quite an amazing best bitter. That little bit of brown malt really made for a complex aroma that you can't really put your finger on. Definitely not out of place. Really nice. I'll do it again. Highly recommended.De-Geert wrote:Any updates yet?

Great! Worth a try than.
So you did 5% Brown, and 95% MO? Or did you also add crystal or something else?

MO 88.5%De-Geert wrote:Great! Worth a try than.

Victory 5.9%
Brown malt 5%
Chocolate malt 1.2%
That's pretty much my standard best bitter malt bill, except this time I added the brown malt. Color slightly darker. Not much, but, what it did to the aroma is really great.
