I brew that lager kit regularly to keep a stock of drinking lager, especially in summer. It's the only non-grain beer I brew.
I replace the sugar with Tesco budget golden syrup (2 jars @ 77p each) and add some hop tea to boost the hoppiness.
The end result is extremely drinkable and similar to the standard, mass-produced UK lagers. It clears star-bright a few days after fermentation stops and needs almost no maturing. It will never win any prizes but sometimes an ice cold lager is just what I need.
I've made my latest batch up to only 4 gallons to see what that does to the flavour.
