Hillbilly Lager

Post by Horden Hillbilly » Sat Jan 06, 2007 4:20 pm

This is Mrs H's favourite ag lager, hopefully I will be up early tomorrow to set it away. It is based on a gravity of 1042 @ 79% effiency, 23L.

Lager Malt 2784g
British Caramalt 398g
Flaked Maize 398g
Brewing Sugar 398g
Saaz hops start of boil, 20 EBU
DCL Saflager yeast

Mrs H also likes a lighter, Pilsner version of this brew, I simply change the Lager malt with Pilsner malt & the British caramalt with Carapils malt.

How are you mashing that HH?
Decoction, temperature stepped or simple infusion?
I must admit to trying temperature stepped and simple infusion in the past for my lagers and to be honest I couldn't tell the difference in the finished beer :?

Straightforward infusion, Mrs H is pleased with the end result so I am not going to argue with her!

I must get lagering soon. May I ask?
Just one hop addition at the start of the boil?
Is caramalt the same as crystal malt?

Just one hop addition at the start of the boil?
Yes, it is a UK style lager I am making for Mrs H and to my knowledge they are not normally late or dry hopped and I have never done so myself.
Is caramalt the same as crystal malt?
It is listed under caramel malts on the H&G website along with crystal malt, however it is much lighter in colour, the EBC rating is 3-5. It is classed as a "body builder" of the lager world in the same way that crystal malt is regarded in bitters.
