Sediment rises and mixes when I open bottles

Post by FATTYTRIATHLETE » Fri Oct 23, 2009 1:50 pm

I normally barrel the beer, but this time I bottled some to give ( a bit !) out to friends.

Been in bottles for 2 months.

Tried one last night, when I opened it was fairly lively and all the sediment came up from the bottom and mixed with the beer

Obviously had to try another one  and no surprise the same.

Still tastes fine to me but would like clear beer

How can I make sure I get clear / non mixed up beer when out of a bottle ?

Many thanks as always.

Well unfortuneatly it sounds over carbonated, which means you will have a hard time of it. But, heres some little tips I found helped.

1. Chill it.
2. Ease the cap off a little at a time (it sort of allows a little gas to escape and then shuts, do this a few times in about an hour can make a difference)
3. Open over a sink!

I bottle all mine and I find it very much depends on the brew.

Coopers Aussie Lager with Coopers Brewing Yeast set like concrete at the bottom of the bottle to give lovely clear fizzy pints......why cant they all be like that? (clear not necessarily fizzy)

All others I've done I've had to leave some liquid in the bottom of the bottle not matter how much I've primed or I risk what my wife refers to as the 'BASS effect' the following day (Bad ASS)

You didn't use finings by any chance did you?

They aren't good for bottled beer as the sediment is unstable.

No finings used, but was thinking about using them so wont now

Many thanks for all the advice.

I have a Coopers Dark Ale to brew soon, so will do a couple of bottles and be interesting to see how the sediment settles.

How much priming sugar did you use? And did you take hydro readings, to make sure primary fermentation was finished? Also, don't let your experience so far put you off using bottles, I've done loads of kits (all Coopers ones) and have never had this problem, all have a nice stable sediment, so I can pour a clear beer. The advise to chill it, is a good one too.

Didnt take readings - will do going forwards thanks for advice.

i used 1/ teaspoon per pint ? Does that sound about right.

Someone else has suggested Isinglass - they used to brew years ago and said it makes sediment solid at bottom and bottle and no chance of moving ~( sounds fun for cleaning ! )

Anbody use this nowdays and where would i buy it ( assuming you recommend it )

thanks.

No thats on the hefty side. 1/2 teaspoon per pint is adequate, and some would say too much! It depends on style and taste.

As the beer matures and sheds a few more points of gravity, it will also become slightly fizzier still. Especially if bottled prematurely.

The sediment is most solid if left over time, and the beer is not treated with any finings, including isinglass. The only thing i'll use is irish moss or protofloc etc (copper finings).
