Halloween Brewday

Post by chris_reboot » Sat Oct 31, 2009 1:22 pm

Well, I decided in the very early hours, to get a brew on to test my new malt I just picked up.
Now the proud owner of a sack of extra pale Marris Otter, I couldn't just leave it sat there, all done up and nice looking ;)

So I got my HLT on at 05:30 (yes, I know #-o ) and went for, wait for it...of course...what else....Pendle Witches Brew.
Well, I like to be seasonal (any excuse really!).
It's from the GW book, and many have enthused about it.

Pale malt, crystal, torrified wheat and some black malt I added to the recipe to get it up to the same EBC level.
Single hop: fuggles and some late fuggles too.

Enjoy....

OG was lower than expected, but I've ended up with more wort for some reason.
Think I overestimated hop loss (well it was 05:30  ).
It'll drop the % a tad which suits me as I want a session beer at the moment anyway, I've just got more of it

Picked up some protofloc replacements from our local micro last night too, and 1/2 tablet did the brew beautifully .
Nice clear run-off into the FV and great coagulation too! Can't remember its name, but the brewery swear by it over protofloc, and I can see why.

Also trying first wort hopping this time around, we'll ee what happens.
Happy Halloween folks!

Looks good... I'm having a week off brewing, I need to clear some space in my conditioning cupboard and drink up a few bottles :)

I would be pleased to pdtnc, but it's either in a cornie or a mini-keg :(
I will be doing it again, probably before xmas, so I will try to bottle some then!

It has got some haze, as have all my beers listed below to some degree or another. I think the mash pH was ok, but I didn't check it this time.
I am getting very high efficiencies so I don't think anything was wrong there. I will probably do the next lot with Asda water as per Chris and Scooby.
I will keep you informed!

I was thinking more a swap with the semi-local chap that is Chris_Reboot (Its his thread after all!) as he's just over T'hill in T'Huddersfield :)
I need to make sure I got a new job sorted before I start spending money on posting bottles... But when I'm sorted, love to swap :) :)
