Suggestions please

Post by Deebee » Tue Nov 03, 2009 10:27 am

Ok, sothe winter warmer is done and looking like it is gonna be a good one.

The suspect batch is still looking suspect and my brother in laws finished the bitter and twisted 8 10 liters) at the weekend.

So i have 15 liters of kegs left. Empty and sounding sad.

I am hoping to get a brew on in the next week of so. Just enough to fill the kegs.

I would like something that is an easy drinking session beer than is not so strong ( not more than say 3.8%)

I have the following hops available.

target
styrian goldings
bobek
challenger
northdown
fuggles
goldings

I am thinking of maybe something with just pale malt ( maybe a tiny bit or wheat oats instead for head retention)

Anyone got any nice thoughts n this one.?

PS any excuses that i can use to persuade the wife to let me do it in the kitchen.......

I'd be tempted to mash at quite a high temperature and put a tin of black treacle in the boil.

BT seems to give a nice satisfying taste to weakish beers.

So from what i have worked out ( without beersmith at the moment)

Is that 1.8 kilo og pale malt at 75% efficiency will give me 4.1%

Thats ok for the brew length i want.

I am now just wondering about the hops. I'd like something that will be a real tasty one based on the hops i have available. At a low strength and using a safe bet safeale 04

I am thinking to use challenger for the 60 minute boil and then either bobek or styrian goldings as the aroma hops.

Until i get to beersmith i can't wok out the amounts.

I have some salvaged nottigham slurry, a dry pack of nottingham and some s--04

All beiong well i get to brew tomorrow evening.....

Yes i looked at this and have also considered a smaller version of Styrian stunner with the amount reduced to give me around the 4% mark.

Am still debating as to whether or not i should have some fuggles in to bitter and then blast the styrians in the last 20 ans then the last 5

I'll have to have a look at beersmith when i get the chance ( after i get home this evening all being well.)

After much trial and reading of recipies i have decided on a play on the styrian stunner.
20 l
3650 pale
25 bobek for 60
15 styrian golding for 60
20 styrian golding for 15
15 styrian golding for 5

Ã…m wondering he i should up the last 5 minute amount to 25. Any thoughts please. Brew day friday.:) thanks

Right now it's 27.6
the stunner was 28 based on the figures from the recipe. Mine is based on 70% so i think i'll up the bobek to 30 and the last one to 20.
Should be nice.

Agreed. In my, albeit worthless opinion, with that IBU there is room for plenty more late hops

Acording to Beersmith the style of beer has an IBU range of between 20 and 45. I have lots of room. However i would lke this one fresh too. Not too bitter but tasty. might use nottingham for it in that it will allow the hops to come through better than the other choice i have of s-04
