OK, so I've now kegged my Youngs Brew. When it says to transfer keg to a cool place after 3-5 days, could I use my garage - or is that too cold?
Problem is, my house is generally always warm (18C or higher), even without heating on so I reckon anywhere in the house won't be cool enough!
Thanks.
What's a cool place?
Re: What's a cool place?
Ideally you'd probably want to server at 15c. I have a room with no central heating, Mid winter it gets to about 16c - that's about right for storage and serving a bitter. Lager prefers colder for fermenting, but longer for conditioning and also cooler for serving if it's done traditionally.
I would expect the Garage to be a little too cool. But perhaps you could condition it for a few days at 18c and then move to the garage if you think you can keep the garage temperature above 10c? Then perhaps let it clear again (1 - 2 weeks) and dispense my topping up the co2 from a s30 co2 type cylinder? I think the lower temperatures you get over the uk in wnter could make it seem hazy and it wouldn't be the ideal serving temoperature though.
I do sympathise but much of the hobby is a tradeoff between what's ideal and what you can get away with.

Re: What's a cool place?
Hi,
I do the secondary fermentation in the house and then transfer to my non insulated shed and I've had no problems.

Cool (no pun intended), thanks!
I might transfer to garage and wrap in blankets to stop it from shivering. Have got this far, don't want to screw it up now!

Re: What's a cool place?
I cold-condition my beer in the shed, which can get very cold in the winter but the beer doesn't seem to mind.
Best wishes

Conditioning cold (e.g. 4 or 5C isn't a problem. You might want to warm it up to at least 12C for drinking, though.
