Thanks trucker, I think I will order a new lid quickly to be on the safe side as I don't know how to check that the one I have is working as it should as I have nothing to compare to with it being my first attempt at brewing. Is there a name or type for these lids that will help me find them easier? I can post a picture of my lid if there are different types?

That's not necessary. Just make sure the rubber on the outside of the pressure release valve is not stuck. Use a small flat bladed screw driver to ease the rubber round.

Jimothy if you have the small CO2 canisters they do empty the whole cartridge when you use it. Its only the big s30 canisters that you do in 1-2 second bursts.

Only use the CO2 when the beer starts to come out slowly.

Ah right, thanks - it is the little bulb type canisters.. I have just checked the SG again and its at 1012, I'm off to work shortly so will check it again in the morning. When I come to put it in the barrel will there be any crap at the bottom that I want to leave there or do I just syphon the whole lot into the barrel?

Thanks again,

Jimmy.

I think my Wherry stoped at 1012. There will be a yeast cake like substance at the bottom of you fv. Try and syphon as much as you can into the barrel, my Wherry did start to clear before I barrelled it so I put a teaspoon of the yeast cake into the barrel also to help with secondary fermentation.

Sorry, just to add to scottmoss' advice: When he says "try to siphon off as much as you can" he means siphon the beer off the yeast cake leaving the yeast cake in the primary FV. I'm a little concerned that you interpret that as an istruction to siphon the yeast as well.
You need some yeast in the keg to ferment the priming sugars and condition the beer hence the good suggestion of adding a teaspoon but there will probably be plenty enough suspended in the beer to do this anyway.
Enjoy :D

Hi,

Yes sorry I meant beer! (Reading back on it I can see that it may have been confusing).

After 6 days, I took a reading of my first Wherry (1020).. And on taste, it was very nice!

Don't know who said it here, but it DOES taste very much like Abbot Ale!

Very impressedf already. :D

Not sure of the temp since I don't have a thermometer right now...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not bottling this yet, understand I've got a few more days of fermenting to go... But as I said, the trial was very nice! :)

Right, my Wherry seems to have stopped at 1012 so I reckon I'm ready to put it in the keg? I'm planning on doing it today as I have the day off work so if anyone has any last minute tips or instructions I'd appreciate them! Once I put it in the pressure barrel shall I leave it in the warm for a while before taking it out to the shed and forgetting about it until christmas??

Thanks again for all your help so far, I'd be lost without you guys! :D

Hi,

My Wherry also stopped at 1012, try to not splash it when putting in to the barrel. Leave it in a warm place for 2-3 days for secondays fermentation and put it in your shed until you're ready to drink it!!

Great, thanks scottmoss - I will do it this afternoon! I am already thinking on to what I can brew next for my other barrel. I also have a friend who works in a pub keeping all the pint bottles for me! I'm wondering if there is a kit that is anything like Guiness? Do you know of one? Or, could you recommend another kit to try? Thanks again. :D

Hi,

I've got a Milestone Black Pearl which is an Irish stout, I was recommended this by my lhbs and said it went down extremely well at a beer festival he went to. Not sure myself yet as I have not started it.
I've got around 5 kits in my cupboard waiting to be started now so not sure which one to do next. The new St Peters Ruby Red Ale should be really nice and also the Brewferm belgian beer kits are also meant to be really good. Do you have a local homebrew shop or order online?
