pressure keg not maintaining pressure?

Post by Deneeve » Tue Nov 17, 2009 1:50 am

Hi all,
My pressure barrel doesn't seem to hold pressure for very long..ie, every 6-8 pints the pressure seems to drop and i have to top it up with the c02 thingy...is this normal?

Strangely, if i dont have a pint for a day or two it is still nicely under pressure when i come to pour one.. any ideas?
Thanks in advance. D

Sounds normal to me. If you draw off the odd pint here and there it gives enough time for the gas dissolved in the beer to come out of solution and restore the pressure.
Best wishes

Thanks very much for your replies :)
The c02 thingy is the great big one that screws into the brass on top of the pressure barrel :)
Thanks again. D

Yeppers. OSB's about on the money here. At least, as ye using the big CO2 flask, ye can choose to give it a top up burst as needed. Try giving it a one second shot of gas. (Saying " Kangaroo " takes one second).

Even better would be to try and pre empt yeself. Give it a shot now, in readiness for having a few tonight. That may give the gas time to get into the beer a bit more. Else ye tend to find the beer gushes out as a ton of foam and rings most of the gas with it.

Bit of a pain. But I guess this is the price we pay for messing around at the lower end of things. I dare say the Shiny addicts can get round this by fitting a Widget World calibrated gas release valve to their Cornie's and so release just the right amount at a go? Dunno.

Stick with it. Ye'll get better. This is where the Art comes into producing and managing our brews. Like the best LandLords around, we see the results of our own experience and effort
