Alcohol content

Hi all,
Can anyone enlighten me with how you find the alcohol content of your brew? Apart from falling over of course which would suggest a good alcohol content, but not necessarily an accurate one,as my mind wonders down various avenues in HBL- (HomeBrewLand) wondering what strength the lovely brew im drinking is?

Someone said,or maybe i've read somewhere its to do with your readings.....i'm currently enjoying victorian style bitter(one of my favourite brews so far) which i took a reading with my hydrometer at 1040 and then put into my pressure barrel when it read 1010 for a couple of days consecutively, i made exactly 25 litres and used 1 kg of sugar. It doesnt taste particularly strong but it does taste very good.

Thanks D.

Assuming you took your gravity readings at 20°C (this is the temp that most hydrometers are calibrated to) then your ABV is 3.9%

Formula: %ABV = OG – FG + 0.5
7.46

OG = original gravity (before pitching yeast)
FG = final gravity (at kegging)

The + 0.5 is to allow for secondary ferment

keg 3 : (Conditioning) : Lightening extract Goldings only

(OG-FG)*131= ABV

1.040-1.010=.030

.030*131= 3.93% ABV

That is how I do the calculation. :boff:
