Adding Sugar To Barrel

Post by ukdayo » Sun Nov 29, 2009 11:25 am

Just purchased a MicroBrewery starter kit with 2 can woodfordes wherry ( 40 pint kit ).
Confused as was told with two can kit you don't need to add sugar to the barrell when transfering from fermenter.
But have read elsewhere that you add sugar even if you are using two can kit??????

Dont want to spoil my first brew so any help would be appreciated !

What it means is that when transferring to the barrel from the fermenter that you are adding a small amount of sugar to aid secondary fermentation and produce carbonation. Usually 85g of dissolved granulated sugar chucked in when barrelling will do the job, no need for fancy spraymalts at this stage.
This will produce the carbonation needed to dispense it from the barrel and to prevent oxidisation that will ruin your brew.

Many thanks

On the subject of spraymalts could i use MUNTONS FOIL PACK SPRAYMALT LIGHT instead of the sugar ( was told it would give a better taste ) when transfering to barrel? Would i use 85g of this instead of 85g of sugar?

you could use that, but to be honest it doesn't make a substantial amount of difference what you prime with as far as flavour goes as the amount is so small. I just use granulated sugar myself, as its much cheaper. If you do go with the spraymalt you'll want to use slightly more to compensate, as it won't ferment out completely like sugar does.

I believe that a general rule of thumb is to use 1.25x more spraymalt than sugar...........in the small amounts involved in usage for priming I don't think that you will taste a difference between the two.
