How much sugar to prime Wherry?

Post by Phil M » Mon Nov 30, 2009 12:41 pm

Havimg sorted my FG issues, I've ben stupid once again  , and binned the instructions. I'm bottling the wherry, but have no idea how much sugar to use, or if I can use BKE instead? (I have a pack on standby!) I'm mixing in a second FV, then bottling, if that makes a difference.

Can someone take a look at a set of instructions for me, or I'm off to Wilco for a look there!

Thanks,

Phil

Hi,

It's half a teaspoon per pint.

I have only ever done one Woodfordes Wherry. I am a grain brewer and almost always bottle my brews with 80g of white sugar mixed in a bottling bucket. The Wherry was also done with 80g (so I guess thats what the instructions said....or the equivalent) for some reason I did it with a syringe. My opinion is that it was too carbonated and would only use 60 g next time. It may be the syringe which made the difference as the bucket method may have in some way wasted some sugar.
I never like the teaspoon method as it can vary so much. Spoons are not all the same. Is it level. Do you scrape it flat. Is it rounded etc. Lots of people regard a teaspoon as 6g. I weight just 2 different spoons 1. 1.5g level and 7g heaped 2. 2.4g level and 9g heaped :!:
Anyway............best go for 80g, see how you like it and adjust it in the future

Hi,

When I did my wherry I used 3.5oz of sugar and it was perfect for me.

Thanks all who have pitched in here. Much appreciated. I went with 80g in the end, and will see how it turns out. I hope it conditions with age, as it looks like I've bottled a puddle, and it tastes kind of interesting. There's a strange after-bite which I am struggling to describe.

Time will tell.....If I can wait that long!

Phil

It's because it's green. Give it 6 weeks or so and then come back and tell us what you think.

Just put mine in the pressure barrel this afternoon, got it down to a steady 1.014 with an aquarium heater set to 20 degrees C in my garage. Put 85g of demerara in the keg and it's sat in my lounge now for a couple of days before I stick it back in the garage. Had a little leak from the black O-ring around the tap housing of my budget keg, but I think it was over-tight as it seems okay now, touch wood. Tasted surprisingly good even at this stage, (yeah slightly bitter aftertaste) but can't wait to see how good it'll be at Christmas!

no more leaks, phew! a little slackening of where the tap housing connects to the bottom of the barrel has sorted that, must have been over tight. Drew off a few ml from the tap after one night sat in the warmth of my lounge and it's got noticeably more fizz than when it was transferred to the keg so another night or two in the warm and it's going in my cold garage, hopefully will be drinkable for New Year (although I suspect some will be consumed at Christmas  )

Just wondering is it worth injecting a CO2 capsule when I transfer it to the cold garage or shall I just monitor how fast it comes out the tap as a guide to whether it needs a covering of CO2 while conditioning?

I just wait until it starts to come out slower then give it a blast of co2!

cheers Scott, that sounds good to me :)

Now this Wherry is in keg, my Coopers Dark ale kit is burning a hole in the kitchen cupboard, I'm not liking the sight of an empty FV

I started my Black Pearl on Saturday and is fermenting nicely so far. Had to put my brewbelt on today as it was really cold this morning.

It's freezing today here in Sheffield! When I took my Wherry out of the garage yesterday the ambient temperature was 7 degrees but it plummetted further last night, although my beer was sat happily at 20 degrees. I was using a 200W aquarium heater that will heat a 200l fish tank even if the ambient temp drops 10 degrees below desired, sounds like overkill but I suspect now the weather has turned it might get tested to it's limits.

Black Pearl is next on the list after my Coopers, will be interested in hearing how it goes :)
