I've heard people recommend that you put the fermentor in a bin bag then it will only overfloew into the bag!

Think your safe without the nails. :D

Yeah, but; It might be better to get Granny out of the way. The blow on a Coopers can be quite alarming!

Really? What damage has this stuff wrought in the past?

Has anyone lost anyone/thing dear to them due to an over-zealous fermentation of Cooper's stout?

What are the worst case scenarios?

I think the Ceiling Hitter must have been about the best one we've seen so far. I seem to remember the guy tried to use an air lock. That just channelled the exuberance and it shot out and hit the ceiling

Be a good one to ferment in a Dalek. Flip the 'head' back and photograph the emergence

Well! I started my first Cooper's stout kit on Wednesday and for the first 24 hours couldn't keep the bugger in the bin! Its beginning to steady down a bit now but still plenty of activity going on. I really don't think an airlock would be a good idea with such a vigorous fermentation. I just loosely fitted the lid and covered it with an old cloth to keep the dust etc out of the bin.

Luckily, I had the FV standing on several layers of old towels etc which mopped up the excess foam - otherwise I would have been getting in the carpet cleaners.

I think Ditch described it as "volcanic." Well, I've done an assortment of kits and AG's over the years and never seen anything quite like it!

Is it just stout that behaves like this?

Cheers,

John

A mate of mine said Coopers Dark Ale is worse!

I also started a Coopers Stout on Wednesday. I use the Young's FV's which are marked up to 27 litres (but hold over thirty) and have a hole and gromit in the lid for an airlock. I can see from the lid that the krausen hit the roof but it hasn't come out of the airlock. I think the bubbles are getting less frequent now so I am thankfully over the worst!

The way i do my coopers to stop the explosion and resulting mess, i only make the brew up to around 4 gallons in a wine fermenter with an air lock then when its calmed down (usually around 3 days) i top up to 5 gallon.

The first time i made it i made up to 5 gallon and it amazed swmbo and myself at the activity in the fv it really does have a life of its own :D

Would be quite happy to use coopers yeast in other brews because it compacts well at the bottom of the fv,bottle, barrel.

Oh, "smart man wanted, Araldite apply within"! That sounds like a great idea.

I have a big kinda plastic box that I intend putting it into, just in case there's overspill.

I may be getting ahead of myself though, I hafta bottle this Wherry yet! :(

At,
If you have the space get another kit on when the fv is empty, ive now got 4 barrels with another on the way

The beer will be better with age so fill everything up is my idea now, just about the only thing i drink young is the coopers standard stout.

The bottles, Esmerelda, the bottles! I've only about a hundred.I haven't enough to store everything. How long would ale/stout hold in a secondary plastic keg for?

Should I get one of them?
