28/12/2009 TTLish

Post by Jymbo » Mon Dec 28, 2009 7:15 pm

Threw this together today. Its based on my last TTL which was a cracker but I threw in a little bit of Crystal for taste and colour and a few extra Styrians for flavour. I ended up with 25L @1044 as opposed to the planned 23L @1042 which means my brewhouse efficiency has rocketed to 81% - think I'm getting the hang of this water treatment business :)

Went smoothly enough until I went to use the IC and found that my hosepipe and outside water tap had completely frozen through so I had to carry the copper outside and plug the IC directly onto the outside tap which I managed to defrost with a few kettles of boiling water! It was -2C out there at 2 o'clock this afternoon :-({|= Anyway, it's bubbling away nicely already. Sadly I didn't have any Whitelabs Edinburgh yeast which worked very well last time, but I'm sure S-04 will do a decent enough job.

No messing around with caramelisation then... best served fresh I found so the Styrians kick stays :)
When I get round to doing another TTL I might try a bit of Munich malt in it :)

Caramelisation is a right PITA I've found - plus you need to boil a very large amount to notice the difference. Every time I've tried it it's bubbled over onto the ceramic hob and got me in trouble with the missus :x I'm sure the Crystal won't give the same flavour but it'll be nice all the same. I didn't use too much so it should just deepen the malt flavour a bit and darken the colour slightly.
