Morning all.

I am off to my LBS in a bit and I fancy trying a Brewferm Abdij Kit I was advised when I enquired that it needed 500g of sugar to be added is this correct? I would have thought DME would be more appropriate?
Anyone out there to advise please?

generally for kits, malt extract would be better than sugar but for belgian beers go with candy sugar. if you use malt extract you can give the brew too much body as the belgian beers work best with a little less body. This is partly due to the higher alcohol content that those kits make but also a general feature of belgian brewing.

Hi!

I made a Brewferm kit in September with 1kg of dark candi sugar, after three months its a superb result from a kit... nice bitter sweet flavour, aromatic with loads of small bubles and a nice tightly packed head...

So be sure to age for 8 weeks at least before drinking.. mines now 3 months old and great!

Belgian candy sugar is very easy to make. All you need is sugar and ciric acid. I amnaged to make it without a thermometer. Just make sure it doesn't burn and you should be fine. Google it.

I'm currently drinking a Belgian Ale brewed with homemade candy sugar. Lovely stuff. 8)

Hi Guy

Thanks for that, I really like Leffe so it would be the closest I could get in kit form.
I nearly have all the equipment ready to extract and AG but don't have the time to put it together yet may be early next year fingers crossed!

I am a biker too but unfortunately had to sell my beloved Fireblade last year due to illness in the family but I plan on rectifying the loss.

I had thought of making it Floyd and even had a look around for a thermometer but the price of them put me off a bit but I may give it a try when swmbo lets me back near the cooker (I broke the ceramic hob at 9.30 on xmas morning).

Hi Swiller!

Sorry to hear you had to sell your Fireblade...

Redundancy in Feb meant I had to thin out my bikes... I'm now down to 2 and a 'scooter' ( a Gilera Runner 2 stroke 180cc, petty quick!) for getting to work on when I dont fancy the walk... lol

I will certainly brew another few brewferm kits, I also fancy the Abidj or whatever its called lol

candi sugar is strange.. I had thought of making some myself - SWMBO has a sugar thermometer :)
what interests me is that adding a kilo of sugar to a 20l kit made a great tasting beer with no 'cidery taste' which is what happened when I added a kilo of brewing sugar to a Coopers Lager kit.... interesting...

I've since done a Coopers lager with a malt sugar mix and brewed with S-23 and even thoughits only had 20 days in the bottle its a 100% improvement on the first attempt.

So for a 9ltr kit you use 500g of candy sugar?
I must admit when I make up Coopers lager I use light dme as I found if I use sugar I end up with a cidery taste.
