First Woodforde Wherry

Post by smarri » Wed Dec 30, 2009 1:33 pm

Hello,

I was interested in brewing my own beer and thought about getting one of the iBrew systems after christmas to test the waters. I mentioned this to my brother, who then very kindly came up with all the things I need to brew my own beer from kits for christmas :D (Thanks again if your reading this!)

So, he gave me a hand getting my first brew started yesterday (the above mentioned wherry) and it has now started to bubble away nicely. My question is this, when it comes to kegging up, it says to add sugar to the brew. My brother also supplied me with a bag of spray malt (Ritchies Light Malt Extract). Can I add this instead of sugar when I keg the beer? If so would the proportions be the same?

Oh and is it bad that I am already eyeing up other kits to brew when my first one hasn't even finished yet!

Many thanks

Simon

Hi smarri and welcome

Sounds like your off to a good start. A Wherry on the go And you've found the best website too.
Wherry is one of my favourite kits and a nice drink, I've made about a dozen of them. When the time comes to kegging or bottling most just use sugar to prime, I use demerera. Half teaspoon per pint approx or 85g for a keg. Priming sugar is only added to help with carbonation and wont add to the flavour enough to be worth doing. I'd save the spraymalt to add to a one can kit. Its quite normal to be thinking many kits ahead even if youve just started akit. we all do it. Cheers Normski

I got my first wherry in at the moment. It looks like its fermenting and the lid has risen in places.

Ok. Thanks for that. It was actually my brother that showed me this forum. I picked up some sugar today, but the brew won't be ready for a little while yet though.

Any thoughts on a good Hoegarden/wheat beer kit that I could try next?
