Hop Bags?

Post by monk » Tue Jan 16, 2007 8:36 pm

Anyone use hop bags to boil hop pellets? I've always used bags and just discovered that some people don't...

Am I the only one?

I've used hop bags in the past, but now use a hop strainer; In addition I've used stainless steel scrubber in the back of the tap (which clogged up :? ) and a rolled up slatter guard.

I like hop bags because there is much less mess

All my hops go into the boiler loose. :)
I was taught rightly or wrongly that boiling the hops loose gave better utilisation and helped to coagulate the hot break material.
But whatever works, works

Just chuck them in the pot. I don't use hop pellets, though.

Ditto for what Tubby said.

I think I might try added the flavor/aroma hops straight to the pot, next time. I wouldn't change a thing, except that the hop aroma and especially flavor is lacking somewhat in my brews. I think adding them loose might get better utilization. We'll see! I made a Sierra Nevadad Pale clone that turned out pretty great, except not enough hop flavor.

Thanks for your responses, guys.

When I did extract brews, I would use a grain bag and throw my hops in there. This gave the hops the freedom of a loose boil but I was easily able to remove them.

I have since bought a hop strainer so throw everything in loose anyway.

Now, it has got me thinking...

If I was to go back to the method of using a grain bag, how would my brew be effected? There would be nothing to filter out the hot break/protein, so this would end up in my beer. Saying that, I imagine that it would also settle out during fermentation?

Any AG brewers who still use Hop Bags able to comment?
