well i got some piece and quiet and spare time so the adapted lager kit got bottled, white wine got bottled, apple kilju got bottled
sloe wine reracked, elderberry reracked, and red wine reracked as i ran out of wine bottles and the turbo credit crunch cider got reracked and has started to bubble again(had a taste ,not as sweet as i thought it would be but no alcohol taste to it yet )
thinking about another lager adaption
cheap lager kit
hallertau hops(as a tea) then dry hopped towards the end(25g tea)(25g dry)
belgian candi suger (1kg)
and switch the heating down in the brew room to do a long slow ferment (15-16%c)
just trying to think of something to prime it with

Done a few kits now and want to make the jump into extract/all grain eventually.

thinking of having a tinker with a bit of malt and hops a mate had left over to make some additions to add to a kit.

I have bare minimum equipment a 10l stock pot, a seive, a thermos flask

could I use these to add the bits of northern brewer hops and caramalt to improve my Coopers Real Ale kit. I will be adding spraymalt and LME too

That's what got me down the AG route Paul, making a kit starting to become a 3 hour experiment so I thought why not go the whole hog. With the hops, I found boiling a small amount and then steeping a larger amount gave some good hop profiles in the finished kits. I generally boil them up in a suacepan and then add the lot to the kit can to dissolve the remaining wort and add the steeping hops at the same time. Through a sanitised sieve into the FV. On malts, I think I am right in saying that the speciality malts do not need to be mashed at 66c etc. to give up their sugars (search on here will confirm that) so I just simmer them steady for 45 minutes or so and then drain off into the FV. Only a matter of time then before you have sacks of grain around the house :)

A little experiment with a Porter kit I've got planned for later this week.

1.8Kg John Bull London Porter Kit
25g Progress 15 min teabag
100g Crystal Malt steeped 70C 30 min
1Kg Medium Dried Spray Malt
350g jar of Blackstrap Molasses
made up to 20 litres
pitched with SafealeO4

plan to bottle this rather than kegging it.

looking forward to doing this as it'll be my first modified kit recipe.

got the London Porter in the FV tonight, modified my original plan slightly, 1kg medium dme instead of 1.5kg dark lme, and dropped the liquorice root extract as it smelled rank when I was boiling it and didn't think the taste of the actual extract was gonna add anything of benefit to the beer. Anyway OG of 1.050, pitched with Safeale-04 at 18C I'll update closer to bottling time [-o<

Blimey! the John Bull London Porter is a lively beast of Ditch Stout proportions. Shortened the brew length to 20l (OG 1.050) and I've come in from work today to find it's spilled over big style. Even my recent Ditch stout at 20l didn't do that. Goodness knows what sort of mess making it up to 23l would have made  It's kicking off some delicious smells as I type =P~

After the liveliest fermentation I've ever seen, the foam has died back on my modified Porter so I took a gravity reading today, it's down to 1.018 from SG of 1.050 last Wednesday, pleased with that and expect I'll be bottling it this coming Wednesday, hoping to get it down to around 1.012ish. Had a sneaky taster from the trial jar and it's very rich and dare I say it not disimilar to Old Peculier flavour and body wise, although it's very early days. Can't wait to see what this is like after 2 months in bottles, seems very promising [-o<

got this modified London Porter into bottles now, with priming it'll come out at at about 5.1% ABV so I'm happy with that. Very happy with how it's tasting, way more body and depth of flavour than my Coopers Dark ale which was the same strength ABV but alot smoother. Quite fruity this and has a slight astringent winey/tanniny sort of dry feel to it which I guess is good being a Porter and that. Really looking forward to seeing what this tastes like after 8 weeks.

hello everyone!,

i've just finished my first real ale extract brew, but due to a lack of both funds and equipment i'm limited to the size of brew (9l)

so with that in mind and a burning desire to build up a stock of affordable beer, i purchased a coopers lager kit canadian blonde i think its called?

i plan to add 500g of spraymalt, and 1 kg of brewers sugar to increase the strength unless anyone here has tried something similar and would advise against it??

btw has anybody tried this particular kit? is it any good?

thanks guys, all input really appreciated as this will ne my first kit brewing exploit.

A little experiment I've got planned for later in the week. I'm wanting a Yorkshire bitter with floral and fruity notes. I had planned on buying a 2 can Brupaks Birkby Bitter kit but the urge to tinker got the better of me

1.8Kg Edme Superbrew Gold Yorkshire Bitter
1Kg Light DME
100g Crushed Crystal Malt steeped 30 minutes 70degrees.
12g Cascade 15 minute teabag
Brew length 21 litres
pitched with Danstar Windsor

plan to keg this one and I'm hoping it'll pour nice and creamy as promised in the kit bumph =P~

500g Extra Dark Dry Malt Extract.
500g Light Dry Malt Extract
1KG Glucose

Mix up to 20L
Add Nottingham Ale Yeast

Ive no idea if this is going to work or not, just experimenting. It should have a fair kick to it though

this one went in the FV this afternoon, an OG of 1.042 and pitched with Windsor at 23 degrees C. Is it me or does Windsor smell alot stronger than Safeale O4, what with the steeped grains and the smell of yeast the house smells like a brewery this afternoon

I bought a cheap Youngs Definitive Bitter kit when i started up again so i got this going with a bit of tinkering on Saturday.

200g Chocolate Malt & 200g Roast Barley steeped for 60 mins @ 65
added
500g Lt Spray Malt
500g Lt Brown Demerera Sugar

Kit into FV, added above mix.
Aerated well with paddle on drill
Topped up to 20L with cold liquor - aerated again

Safale S04 pitched at 24 degrees.

OG 1.046 at 24 degrees so probably about 1.047

Fingers crossed! [-o<

sounds really good Cleggy, keep us posted on how it goes. I'm having more fun sprucing up cheaper one can kits than I am doing the two can kits to be honest.

My Edme Yorkshire Bitter is making a bid for freedom this afternoon, smells amazing =P~, although that Windsor is a lot more yeasty smelling than SO4 that I usually use
