collecting slurry questions
collecting slurry questions
Evenin' all,
If I collect the slurry from my fv after bottling my stout, should I only use it in future with stout or could I use it with other brews? Also, how long will this slurry keep for in the fridge, and is there a proper name for it?
Chin chin!

Re: collecting slurry questions
The stuff at bottom of the FV is called the trub. This is made up of dead and alive yeast so you need to "wash" it to end up with only alive yeast. I've never tried it but there is a guide at:
http://hbd.org/carboy/yeast_washing.htm
You'll end up with clean yeast so you can use it on any beer that yeast is suitable for.

Re: collecting slurry questions
Dont go messing about with yeast, if you dont know what your doing!...Read up about it first. There two types of yeast washing, the simple one is water washing, the more complicated is acid washing, water washing will not clean baterial away, just cleans the trub from the yeast, acid washing will clean baterial away etc, this is used by professional brewerys. You must used the upmost care and cleanliness.....I could write on and on....

Re: collecting slurry questions
I had read this thread: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=28536&start=15#p311147
and was just trying to find out more info really.
So you'd advise against doing this for kit brewing?

Re: collecting slurry questions
I collected 150-200mls of Nottingham slurry (direct from the bottom of the FV) from my Saltaire Goldings Ale clone and used it directly (no washing) to ferment my Fermenting: Four Shades of Stout. The stout took off in under 3 hours (check out the FV pic in my brew day post). So long as your sanitation is sound you shouldn't have any problems
I would tend to go from lighter ales to darker/stouts when reusing slurry (read it somewhere but can't remember where
) I'm sure chris-x1 would be the chap to talk too on this!

Re: collecting slurry questions
I was planning on getting another Wherry going this afternoon, so in theory I could bottle my stout, dig out some slurry, clean and sanitise the fv, and then reuse the slurry directly to set off the Wherry.... although that would be going from dark to light...
Re: collecting slurry questions
So long as your sanitation is good, what have you got to loose! I've found this hobby is a lot more fun when you experiment. What is your sanitation routine, and what yeast stain is it?
Re: collecting slurry questions
Well I boiled a jar and lid yesterday for storing the yeast while I'm cleaning out my fv, I'll boil a spoon as well. As for the yeast strain... I don't know what it is - whatever one is supplied with Milestone's Black Pearl.
I'm keen to experiment but in an educated fashion, I'm not just going to do something random lol. That's why I'm on here asking for advice before I knacker a perfectly good Wherry kit!

Re: collecting slurry questions
I've been keeping my Wyeast 1469 going for 12 months now by storing slurry in the fridge and then repitching into my next brew. No problems yet, but I am always very careful about sanitation.
Re: collecting slurry questions
This may be a very daft question but, whats the reason for doing this?
Re: collecting slurry questions
They're after tried and tested yeast strains. Similarly some folk might use yeast cultures propagated from commercial bottled conditioned ales or cask ales from the pub even.bigdave wrote:This may be a very daft question but, whats the reason for doing this?
Re: collecting slurry questions
In my case bigdave, purely out of curiosity. And learning as many brewing methods as possible.bigdave wrote:This may be a very daft question but, whats the reason for doing this?
Well, I'm about to do it anyhow.... water boiled downstairs, cans warmed up and waiting to be poured. Now, where's that piece of wood gone....
Re: collecting slurry questions
My reason is that Wyeast only brought out 1469 (the Timothy Taylors strain) as a limited edition, so I can't easily get more of it.bigdave wrote:This may be a very daft question but, whats the reason for doing this?
