Forgot the Protofloc

Post by adodman » Wed Dec 09, 2009 10:51 am

I was making a JW Lees bitter clone from Mr Wheelers BYOBRA.

Working in the dark in the back garden were I do all my boiling I made the schoolboy error of forgetting to add the protofloc tablet when I added the 10 min hops.

What effect will this have on the resulting beer? I am assuming I'll be drinking cloudy beer. #-o

Would there be any benefit to reboiling this morning bearing in mind I've already pitched the yeast and its started to ferment like a good 'un.

Cheers all and Merry Christmas

Just leave it. Myself and others on JBK have done this at least once.

When I did it I still got good drinkable beer that wasn't cloudy, but I did barrel it and made sure it was drunk earlier than other "protofloc treated beers".

If clarity is your concern you could always rack it after fermentation and add finings

What's protofloc? Hmm - shall google it guess it's essentially same as irish moss.

Did the same in my most recent beer - forgetting to put irish moss in at 15 minutes - beer is clearer than ones i've made WITH irish moss! So def nowt to worry about - racking it off and leaving it to drop brite in keg will be fine (no bad pun intended), gelatine if you really need it...

I've forgot both protafloc and Irish moss on numerous occasions and to be honest I've not really noticed any difference. Apart from one batch that was a bit cloudy the rest have dropped clear enough.

As stated earlier, just add some finings in secondary!

I've just realised (sat at work in my lunch break) that I forgot to add the Protafloc to the boil last night. I have been leaving my earlier brews in primary for a week, then transferring to secondary for another week before bottling as I don't have a keg. Will I be OK to add finings into the secondary? Any recommendations on what to go for?

I forgot to add Irish Moss in my recent Styrian Stunner brew and though the brew was a tad more cloudier than my other brews when it was bottled it was clearer than a bright thing on a summers day 3 weeks later. The secret of brewing is to use plenty of positive waves when your brewing and everything will be okay. 8)

I have forgotten the protafloc before, and ironically remembered it for a wheat beer when I was supposed to forget it. To be honest (and I think I may be alone here) I couldn ‘t give much of a toss if my beer turns out cloudy and I think if you forget the protafloc in the first place just leave it – don’t try to remedy it, for everything you do to attempt to “fix” it adds risk to the hygiene of the whole process.

Well I'm with you on that one. I'll aim for a clear beer, but if it's cloudy it isn't the end of the world. I certainly wouldn't avoid drinking it just because it wasn't crystal clear.
