Brewday 19/01/10 - House blonde ale

Post by mysterio » Tue Jan 19, 2010 11:58 am

First brew of the year :D I meant to get this one on late last year but my HLT froze overnight...

This is becoming one of my 'house' recipes, kind of a hoppy blonde/summer ale with quite low bitterness, this iteration has some added Caramalt to give it a bit of body and sweetness to help counter the drying effect of Nottingham.

Nonsense!
Thermometer in mash, Mash being stirred, doughing in (tricky if you are by your self), spoon in mash, Thermometer and Spoon in mash... the possibilities are endless... Naked mashing... maybe something like 'Girls with Guns' but more 'Miss with Mash' or 'Birds 'n Beer' and a bit of your Mash Paddle Technique ;) :D

There's dedication -brewing blonde ales while it's freezing outside!

Sounds like a nice recipe - how do you like the Aurora hops?

Sounds good - hope it went well. Those aurora hops are pretty strongly flavoured - I used a bit with cascade a while ago and got a really fruity, orangey/grapefruit result.

Went without a hitch, only problem is I cooled the wort for too long and it went down to about 12 C :? The whirlpool immersion chiller is pretty efficient.

Fermentation still hasn't really kicked off because of that.

Big fan of the Aurora hops, agree they're quite pungent. I get a tropical fruit/marijuana type of aroma from them.

This has fermented out now, took a sip from the FV, tastes like pineapple juice :D

I wonder if my current brew will have some pineapple going on? I've put about 90g in it at various times.

yep, started on the 4th... Its good, its interesting how much I know already (thanks to this place) but good that there is plenty to learn too :)

We've got a cracking beer on at the moment called 'Crystal Red', its all in the name but it has Dark Crystal in it giving it a dry toffee taste, very drinkable :)

I'm a big fan of the darker crystal malts.

Have you been able to influence the recipes or the process at all or is it all pretty much brewing the same set of recipes? Tired of cleaning the mash tun yet? :=P

They have a pretty big lead time on new brews, plenty of work to do to full-fill orders and lots of regular sales of Blonde, Stein Gold, Cascade etc

:)
