Protz doesn't have much of a clue about beer really, despite writing 17 books or however many it is. I wouldn't take his opinion seriously.critch wrote:
as for roger protz, he wrote a very snotty discourse on my mate pauls golden sands winning best bitter at gbbf, saying it wasnt brown enough to be a bitter

What would you ask Brewdog?

Traditonally used to make Eisbock, so: when does a beer become a spirit is maybe the question...targ2002 wrote:Maybe I'm missing something. But if you freeze the beer and then remove the ice. wouldn't that be distilling and no longer beer?
On which topic (well almost) I've got two bottle of beer schnapps from Bamberg - one from Schenkerla and one from Kloserbrau. Would brewdog call these beers?
Re: What would you ask Brewdog?
Yeah, it's ice distillation (whisky etc uses heat distillation).lancsSteve wrote:Traditonally used to make Eisbock, so: when does a beer become a spirit is maybe the question...targ2002 wrote:Maybe I'm missing something. GerodieBrewer: I'm 99% sure that the stout they used was Paradox. It's a stout they sell in a variety of forms (aged in different barrells). They aged the Paradox for TNP in a different way to any of the Paradox's you can buy though, so you couldn't get hold of the exact thing. Might still be of interest though. You can get the Isle of Arran version in Oddbins.

Well, I've just cracked open the bottle of Tactical Nuclear Penguin!!!! Was saving it for Xmas/New Year but it didn't make it to the party...
If I ignore the fact it's been frozen/thawed so many times, and the resultant beer drawn off, enough times to get it above 30+ %, it's actually quite nice. There is no drink like it. and it's a bit like marmite.... you'll either like it or hade it!
Also, the mouthfeel was like a light treacle and measured to gravity - it was around 1022, which seems to match the taste.
Talk about radical brewing - this takes things to the extreme.....
I dunno if Brewdog produce the Stout that started before they messed about to make Tactical Nuclear Penguin, but if they did, would love to try it!
P.S. I have one more bottle of TNP so if any members in the North Eaat (Tynemouth) area are interested, I'm happy with hosting a meeting.
Did you end up splitting that bottle (the one in the piccy) unlike the tokyo (18 %) which would probably be best consumed in the one sitting surely something as strong as this could be treated just like a spirit, ie you could take a nip and then put it back into the cupboard until such times as you fancied another be that days, weeks, months or maybe even years later.
Re: What would you ask Brewdog?
Thanks for the info, Chunk - very interesting... never heard of Eisbock before - don't think Ill be to make on though
Yep, delboy, ended up splitting it, served in a couple of whiskey tumblers - my made didn't like it, so I probably had most of the bottle - bad idea! took a couple of days to recover
I guess, coming in a beer bottle, it gives you the impression it won't keep once opened, but as you say, at that strength it's not likely to go off in a hurry!
All in all, glad I've tried it, but wouldn't do it again

Re: What would you ask Brewdog?
Bought a bottle last week and sampled on Saturday night.

Nice packaging.

For some reason I was expecting a resealable bottle. Anyway I replaced the crown cap successfully.
Tasting it seemed like a mellow, smoky, peaty island single malt, without the burn you get from more pure spirit.
Don't know if that comes from the whisky barrel maturation process or the concentration from freeze distillation.
It was not as sweet as I expected but was pleasant nevertheless.
Sampled about a third of the bottle which is probably enough for one session, washed down with a bottle of Punk.

Not sure I'd buy another but as has been said its something you need to try for yourself.
Looking forward to enjoying the Tokyo.

Re: What would you ask Brewdog?
i really want to try TNP but absolutely cant justify the price. i might think about it as a graduation present to myself in 6 months.
i think a resealable bottle would have been a good idea, but if its carbonated (is it?) that makes it a bit tricky i suppose.
meantime though, i must try Tokyo. in fact i might order a bottle tonight.
while im here, il just note that i think Brewdog are discontinuing The Physics, so if you see it and like it i would buy it while you get the chance, i found some in tesco recently but it now looks like its been replaced by 5 a.m. saint (which has been made to replace The Physics), which i would also recommend you buy because i think its F!cking awesome!its like eating a bowl of hops!

Re: What would you ask Brewdog?
I actually thought The Physics had been discontinued ages ago because I haven't seen it anywhere for ages. I do know Chaos Theory is also being dropped.

Oh dear, Chaos theroy is my favourite.

i thought it had been discontinued ages ago too, it must just have been tesco getting rid of a large amount of stock. cant believe they are dropping chaos theory its excellent! i thought they had only just bought it out, ive only had one bottle and i shared that with my dad!Invalid Stout wrote:I actually thought The Physics had been discontinued ages ago because I haven't seen it anywhere for ages. well if chaos theory is being ditched they might give me the recipe! hope to be going back in the next month or so, i'll ask them.
Re: What would you ask Brewdog?
Love 5am saint too. Such much hop, but missing the bitterness you'd expect. Very very drinkable. I thought it had been brewed as a one off.
Re: What would you ask Brewdog?
By all accounts 5am Saint is one of the new core range. Interesting that the regular beers have ended up quite close to the mainstream in alcohol level — they've a hoppy bitter at 4% (Trashy), a hoppy pale 6% ale (Punk), a hoppy brown 5% beer (5am) and a 5% lager!
Re: What would you ask Brewdog?
It's a good job they're not in any way commercial!

Re: What would you ask Brewdog?
Their beer is pretty "unsual", when you compare it to other beer you can buy in the supermarket though ... to be fair.Eadweard wrote:It's a good job they're not in any way commercial!
There may be a lot fo 5% lagers around, but not many of them taste like 77. "a hoppy pale 6% ale (Punk)" is also a bit misleading. How many other US style IPAs at 6% can you buy in Tesco? Sierra Nevada Pale and Flying Dog are the closest you'll get and they are quite hard to come by.
The core range might be a bit safer than the likes of Tokyo and TNP, but they're still miles apart from the shelves you get of same old brown beer in UK supermarkets.
