Dragon Stout....Jamaica's Finest Export!

Post by kay-jay » Wed Feb 10, 2010 5:27 pm

Hi Everyone,

Has anyone tried dragon stout??? its a 7.5%abv stout import from jamaica. i buy it from manchester asduh. but its readily available in most off licences anywhere near a carribean community. I fell in love with it years ago when i worked in the infamous moss side.

Has anybody tried to recreate this beautiful stout, i would be very grateful for any recipe ideas that are a rough approximation of this.

hope someone can help ......

cheers
:D KJ

wow, we used to drink this 20 years ago. Haven't had it in quite a while, but I do remember it being very malty and heavy on the alcohol aftertaste. Not very carbonated either.

not much help, sorry.

Yeah it's a nice occasional tipple.

If i were to try and recreate it i would go something like this:

23l batch
75% Efficiency
Est. OG 1.077
Est. FG 1.020
Est. ABV 7.5%
55 EBC
25 IBU

6350g Pale Malt
800g Flaked Barley
600g Roasted Barley
25g Target hops - full boil
Nottingham yeast (perhaps)

Going only on my opinion that it's:
-Full-flavoured
-Roasty
-Slightly sweet
-Not that bitter

That's a bizarre grain bill for a stout.

Good luck finding those hops!

Hi Kay-Jay,

Not sure how you got on with Dragon Stout but I found this recipe for Dragonhead stout online. It might be worth a look:

http://www.hopandgrain.com/default.aspx ... 2489563260

sounds similar to the one you already got :?:

That recipe seems wrong. It's just a bitter.

Good to know. I am trying my first extract brew as soon as my cider has finished. (if it ever does). I was going to try the hop back stout recipe off this site but may rethink it now...

Thanks for the tip, I will go for it then. I couldnt find Maris Otter Pale malt in LME, so I am going to try the Brupaks pale Malt. You think that would be OK :?:

Totally fine, so long as its fresh. Dry spray malt is another option and a safer bet if the stuff in tin cans is older.
