Re: Outrageous IPA + photo's
Returned from the job early. I have just popped the top on the bottle of evil twin. Same for me no Jilly Goodsons here, my impressions are.
Popped top, no gas to hear, poured nice and clear with a few gas bubbles released. Held up to the light and beautiful red tones to the beer. Very smooth and sweet, getting toffee and slight burnt(in a good way) grains maybe. I very much like this beer and the only thing i'd change is carbonation. BUT that's purely personal taste and since i can't find your recipe for the beer the highest compliment i can pay you is can you send me the recipe please? This is going on the list!!
Almost forgot to say, when i took the first sip i flashed immediately to Cairngorms Wildcat. SWMBO and daughter also like it.

Re: Outrageous IPA + photo's
Thanks Joe, glad you enjoyed it.
To be honest, I'm surprised it was still ok, as it was poured into the bottle from a corny a few weeks back. Hence the lack of bubbles. The recipe is here: http://www.mrmalty.com/late_hopping.htm (bottom of the page)
I substituted Amber malt for Victory in my first attempt, but this one used Biscuit. There's not much in it, but i think i preferred the Amber malt recipe.

Re: Outrageous IPA + photo's
Nick,
East India Imperial India Pale Ale bit the dust but oh what a glorious death! SWMBO and I enjoyed it alongside a Hop bomb IPA of my own for comparison. This was worth doing as it highlighted flavours in both beers that i think would have been in the background halfway through if they had been drank on their own. Again, Goodson's not in the building so its as i wrote it down.
Ace label
Nice colour
Good clarity
Little carbonation
Some hop aroma(very nice)
As we drank it, the following was written down in this order.
Bitter
Zingy
Smokey
Sweet
Clean taste
The smoky thing going on in the beer was like a peat whiskey, liked it very much. Surprised to find it in an IPA but in a good way. What did you use to achieve this layer?

Re: Outrageous IPA + photo's
Thanks Joe. I'm really pleased that you liked it.
I can completely understand your tasting notes, although i have no idea where the complexity comes from. Except for the smokiness, as i dropped me roll up in the boil.
(only joking; gave up years ago)
The recipe is fairly simple with 1/2 kilo of EKG full boil & 80g dry hop and 7kg Maris Otter. The mash schedule is different; in that it's mashed for 3 hours with a mashout for 30 mins at 77C, but i can't see that this would make a lot of difference. I use Wyeast 1098 in all of my big IPA's. I think that helps with the malt and hop flavours and won't attenuate too far, but I think it's an ageing thing that gives the beer it's texture and......well......niceness.
I have two more bottled up. Mr Hadleys IPA with 400g Fuggles full boil & 100g EKG dry which should be ready about Xmas and Mr Nick's IPA with 400g Aurora full boil and 100g Styrian dry hop which won't be ready untill next March. Planning an 1850 Porter soon, which should be ready around Xmas also. I will send you a sample of each nearer the time.

Re: Outrageous IPA + photo's
Sounds good to me and happy to be a taster! I will send you a bottle of my Vulcan IPA when its done. 11.2oz hops split between first gold, simco and amarillo in a 35ltr batch. I guess the smoky thing is from the yeast then as i'd not tasted it before. Nice one Nick.
Re: Outrageous IPA + photo's
Great Post, this "1868 East India Pale Ale - Amsinck" is next on my list of to do's. I bought the Home Brew Classic IPA book having read about it on here. I take it this recipe is actually out of the Durden book is that right?jubby wrote:Thanks Joe. I'm really pleased that you liked it.

I love the idea of making beers that are no longer commercially viable / available. I may have to put my hemp boxer shorts on to get the full nostalgic feel but not until next year at least...
Re: Outrageous IPA + photo's
Yes it's the Durden Park recipe. The 1868 IPA looks fairly similar. I can highly recommend these old ales and once you have tasted one, you will be hooked. Good luck with it.Great Post, this "1868 East India Pale Ale - Amsinck" is next on my list of to do's. I bought the Home Brew Classic IPA book having read about it on here.
