Caroline's with Fuggles?

Post by Jerry Cornelius » Thu Feb 18, 2010 11:16 pm

I've brewed 14 AGs over the last 6 months using GW's recipes, and been very happy with the results, but now I want to learn what the different ingredients are adding to the taste.

I thought that I'd start with a Caroline's Fine Ale with Goldings (i.e Pale Malt and Goldings) and then do the same recipe but this time with Fuggles. I imagine that this will show me the difference between the two hop varieties, but, will I end up with a beer I want to drink? I have made the Caroline's with Goldings as my first brew and it was very nice, but I have no idea if Fuggles will work! The experiment will no doubt tell me, but I don't want to brew something horrible! If I had the time/space/money etc. I could devise all sorts of experiments, but I don't!

Provided that this is a good idea, I propose to start with SO4 as a yeast in both, and then go for a liquid yeast and make both batches again, hopefully (if I'm not too greedy  ) having all four batches (well, some of) to taste, side-by-side, as a comparison and learn how the yeast/hops change the basic flavour.

Is this a sensible way to proceed, or does anyone have a better plan? Ideas and opinions welcome.

Best laid plans! That's what I set out to do with hops and malt, I did some of it but then brewed other stuff and sort of forgot about it. Too many ideas and not enough brewing time. ;-)

I know what you mean, but now I want to go back to basics and try and learn what's what!

I did an amber malt brew that was supposed to be followed by a brown malt and mild ale malt brews. I suppose I still might do them but they just aren't top of my list anymore.

Definitely a good way to learn though.

I did a similar malt experiment this winter with 16 blends of Pilsner, Munich, and Vienna in Helles recipe. It's been a big hassle, but once they are all bottled I'll have the whole summer to do some serious German malt studies.
