Can someone point me in the right direction?

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Can someone point me in the right direction?

For some reason, I cannot decipher Chris' sticky thread on determining water properties.

From this pdf, can someone please tell me if figures on the sheet are useful in determining water alkalinity? - http://www.nwl.co.uk/Hardness_2008.pdf.

or......

I've just been on my local water authority website and it states the following:

Water is moderately soft....
Hardness in mg/l as calcium carbonate - 65
Hardness in mg/l as calcium - 26.

I've done 1 AG with this water untreated (pale beer) and had no problems

Chris-x1 wrote:You aren't interested in hardness, you are after accurate alkalinity figures expressed in the equivilent amount of calcium carbonate (CaC03). Its not clear from the report whether alkalinity is expressed as CaCO3 or HC03. This is irelevant though as the report is from 2008 and the min and max figures vary so much that they are useless for brewing purposes.

I suggest you test your own water - see the other stickies, I have produced a video on how to do so.
Cheers Chris, thought as much but wasn't too sure

update.....

I've got my hands on a Sailfert test kit and the alkalinity of my water is an average of 111.5ppm. Where does this put me in the scheme of things?

Cheers Chris.

Now that I have a total alkalinity figure to play with and a crs calculation, do I need to bother looking into adding gypsum, DLS etc? Are these calculated upon the amount of water used and not by a water report?
