GWs Guiness

Post by mctoon » Wed Mar 24, 2010 10:59 pm

Finally got hold of some target hops, so planning on a guiness at the weekend, anyone tried the recipe from the new book?

Cheers Mal

Thats a bit of a coincidence, I too am thinking of doing this recipe but havent got any target (though I hear that you can substitute Fuggles).

I brewed it with fuggles and challenger. Tweaked the other ingredients slightly and it turned out great.

I have used Target and Northerbrewer in GW Guiness and it turned out great. Doesnt matter that much which hops you use.

I haven't seen the new book. The last recipe I saw, called for bullion hops. I didn't have any so used target. It was fine but I made it a little too bitter :?

You can substitute in a few different types - most will work fine as all you'd be looking for is bitterness and little hop character - you just need to make sure you correct for the amount of bitterness. Fuggles, Northern Brewer, Target, Challenger, Goldings would all probably work well. Use the hop calculator in the hints/tips section ;)

Yep, Ive tried it. I fermented with White Labs Irish (WLP004). A nice brew. Tasty, and very close to the original.

I had the last pint of a barrel of this last night... some people at my archery club tried it too and it was universally very well liked. It's a winner, I'll definitely be making it again.
