Black Midden Stout

Post by GeordieBrewer » Mon Mar 29, 2010 2:41 pm

So, as I've not brewed a Stout before, after doing some reading up, have come up with the following.... I'm guessing from the BJCP guidelines, it'll be an Imperial Stout at 7%...

My sack of pale malt is almost gone, so I reckon there may be a lot of flour in this one... just hoping I don't end up with a set mash, but hopefully the Torrefied Wheat should compensate [-o<

Just been down to the home brew shop and picked up a packet of T-58.... last time it did a grand job with Old Tom, so hopefully will do again :)

Any thoughts/suggestions? One think I am going to be wary of after seeing previous posts is the beast wanting to climb out of the fermenter

looks good to me .. very similar to the stout I did a couple of weeks back. I think if I did mine again, I'd up the pale another kilo, or maybe add some oats.

Hope it all goes well!

Love the AAs of the Challenger :-D

Cheers Tony!

Interesting you mention Oats.... It's got me thinking of Sam Smiths Oatmeal Stout  I like the idea of doing some Sam Smith style beers... my local (The Prince of Wales on Shields fish quay is a cracking pub) and the cask bitter is £1.28 a pint... I dunno if the cost has an influence, but it's a cracking pint :)

Graham's next beer engine should include a "round-up" feature to a couple of decimal places I reckon :) Either way, I like it, and have used it for over a year, and had some good batch records from it....

Hot liquor is currently boiling up with filtered water, 1/2 Campden Tablet and 5g Gypsum... 2g Epsom Salts to go in in the morning ready to hit the mash tun. A week and a bit off work is great! maybe 1 more brew remaining before I pack in for the summer and don't start again until September...
