AG #18 Time to parti.... gyle

Post by BrewerBen » Fri Apr 02, 2010 11:57 am

Seen this mentioned a few time on this forum and in the Durden Park Book so thought i'd give it a go. Barley Bottom delivery was right on time for the easter break so have plenty of time to do it,

Plan is as follows

7.5Kg of Pale Malt
1 Kg of Imperial Malt

1st runnings will give me a small quantity of strong beer. Hopefully around 14 ltre's at 1.079
Hops used will be 100gm's of goldings for a 90min boil - in the style of the durden park recipes but not follwong any particular one. I think technically this one would be a mild  .

The grains will then be batch sparged twice to give enough wort for 23 litres of small beer hopefully at around 1.041.
Hops used for this one will be 18gm's of target for the 90 Min boil, 30gms of bobek at 15mins and another 30 gms to steep.

I'm not that bothered about hitting any particular target and will be largely winging it. Just doing a first run to discover any issues to then adjust any following attempts.

I will be taking pictures as i go and the mashtun is as full as it's ever been. Ive also just realised sparging will be interesting as my boiler isn't big enough.

The 1.080 wort tastes like malt extract syrup its so sticky, and a little buscuity which i think would be the imperial malt. Suprisingly not very bitter for 100 IBU.

All in all it went very well, ended up with 12 ltr's at 1.080 and 23 ltr's at 1.040. I will be posting a few pic's later but the day was rather hectic with 2 boils going at the same time in different rooms so may be a few gap's.

Hops ready for the 2 Boil's:

First batch, added a little sparge water as is didnt think it would give me enough volume:

Running the first batch into the stockpot i used to use for extract brew's:

Re-circulating the second batch:

Running off the second batch into a fermentor as the boiler was being used for the sparge water:
Image

3rd and final batch. I Had to top up the boiler a little for the 3rd batch and bring up to temp as it wasnt quite big enough to hold all the sparge water:

Stockpot filled with the first batch and on the stove ready for boiling:

2nd and 3rd batch's blended for the "small" beer:

100g of hops in and around the stockpot:

There's some wort in there somewhere:

Not quite so many hop's for the small beer:

Cooling the Big beer, nice cold break too:

Re-hydrating 2 packs of S05 yeast. By the time i pitched it the yeast was trying to climb out the jug:
Image

Gravity at around 1.080, a little higher than expected but the volume was lower:
Image

Cooled the wort a little of the small beer and added the aroma hop's, i for got the pic of the flavour hops as i was cooling the big beer at the same time:

Re-hydrating the windsor yeast for the small beer:

Runoff into the fermentor:

Gravity Reading of around 1.040 - right on target:

The spoon i lost stirring in the flavour hop's:

Job Done:

The big beer the next morning, maybe 1 pack of s05 would have done:

Not quite so lively but steady activity from the airlock:

Hope yours goes as well or better than mine!
The Serious IPA has stopped a bit early but has fantastic promise, 580gms of WGV in total, the nIPAr is already in a corney and a few bottles - should end up as a pleasant summer bevvy!
I'm hooked.........

Quick update, the small beer is down to 1.014. The Big beer ive not tested yet (dont want to waste too much of it) but the yeast head continues to grow, over the 20ltre mark for a 12 litre brew!!

I am really considering doing this as the wife will be going away soon... it woud be great do do a 2 double brew day2 but cutting it shorter by doing the boils back to back.

how did this turn out?
