Vulcan IPA. Its beer Jim but not as we Know it( Titan IPA )
Re: Vulcan IPA. Its beer Jim but not as we Know it
I have drifted away from much in the way of yeast presence in my IPA's. If i keep it low i get little or no side flavours(may be a bit ott in us05 though). Also 9 deg is the lower temp that was used in Scotland for fermentation in the 1700's before their own success in IPA's made the Scottish brewers ramp up the temps to increase throughput. At one point Scottish IPA's were a recognised different beastie to the English one's.
Re: Vulcan IPA. Its beer Jim but not as we Know it
Final thinking behind it is that as i don't secondary or long term keg it gives me a longer dry hopping schedule. Hoping for about 10 to 15 days total for this one. Will ramp up with heat at the very end of the fermentation.

Sounds good - I didn't even realise US-05 would work that low.
Re: Vulcan IPA. Its beer Jim but not as we Know it
I had it working down at 6 degrees. In saying that you might as well quadruple the usual fermentation time at that temp. It was good to see though. I check the FV every day beat the head back in with the hop bag and the next morning its up again.
Re: Vulcan IPA. Its beer Jim but not as we Know it
Drew a 1/4 ltr off the bottom of the FV last night. Now sitting at 1.020 and the aroma has changed completely. Its really ramped up and as well as the tropical fruits there are huge bursts of pine and limes. Heat source(20 watt wine heater plate taped to outside of FV) gets turned on today. I think i've made a liquid hop delivery system here.
Aromas off this beer so far
Peaches
mangoes
Limes
Lemons
Pine
Getting very little break in the samples i am taking from the FV. Think that might be linked to the extra time during settling then cooling phase. I only mention this as the extra 1/2 hour has made a huge difference to the break volume in the FV and if you can't remove the break from your FV the extra time during cooling appears to make a big difference to what is getting through.

Done dusted and bottled today. Drew off 2 of 300ml yeast samples to try next brews. Want to see if i can taste a difference in using US-05 as a repitch. Also keeping the dry hops to go in the kettle next time as well.

60+ bottles of this one so that will do nicely. Oh no, the urge to brew has descended again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Vulcan has more body which balances very nicely with tropical hops. If anything i could do with reducing the body and upping the hop aroma slightly, say 10% each. Might adjust the hops schedule to bring down the IBU's by 10 or so but take the hop schedule more towards the last 5 minutes.
Damn the expense mid atlantic is fine but its lacking body IMHO, still it was the one my Dad prefered but he is a lager drinking poof!
Off to a bbq tomorrow with 25 bottles of Midatlantic and 15 bottles of Vulcan, what a hobby!
