Can anyone recommend a good extract IPA recipe
I've been doing a fair bit of brewing as of late but what my cellar needs is a good IPA.
Has anyone brewed a great IPA (either English or American - I'm not fussy) they would like to share with the rest of us?
Cheers
Jason

IPAs don't use much (if any) speciality grains so malt extract plus hops of your choice will do it.
Best wishes

Do you think a mix of Northern Brewer and Styrian Goldings would work well together as copper hops? I've got loads left in my freezer? Maybe using more Styrian Goldings as aroma hops too?
Cheers

No idea. I've never tried Northern Brewer and I can't stand the taste of Styrians.Fuggled Mind wrote:Do you think a mix of Northern Brewer and Styrian Goldings would work well together as copper hops? I've got loads left in my freezer? Maybe using more Styrian Goldings as aroma hops too?

I'll give it a go. Experimenting is half the fun.OldSpeckledBadger wrote:No idea. I think I've only ever used Northern Brewer in a Guinness clone and tbh you couldn't really taste them. I suspect any bittering hop would have done the job.
Cascade is the first hop I think of when you say IPA but, as you say, experimentation is a good way to learn.

That shi't has no place in an IPA. It was never used and if you use it now then it's not IPA, it's hilly billy juice.boingy wrote:Cascade is the first hop I think of when you say IPA

What, not even in an American IPA?OldSpeckledBadger wrote:That shi't has no place in an IPA. It was never used and if you use it now then it's not IPA, it's hilly billy juice.boingy wrote:Cascade is the first hop I think of when you say IPA

Re: Can anyone recommend a good extract IPA recipe
Hmm... American IPA...
I wonder if thats what OSB means by hilly billy juice...?

FWIW Northdown & Challenger are used in White Shield which I beleive is considered a traditional IPA... (I'm sure a quick search of this forum will bring up a recipe for White shield)
Whatever it is called its a good drop IMHO

Cheers!

There's no such thing as American IPA. They never exported high-strength pale ale to India. And their beer, like their cars, is crap.boingy wrote:What, not even in an American IPA?

So no Cascade in an IPA...
"And their beer, like their cars, is crap."
Bit of a sweeping statement..... Especially as the UK car industry is so strong these days, especially when it comes to producing quality cars for the average joe...
The UK brewing industry isn't that different to that in the USA either... Producing bland beer for the widest appeal - save a few craftbrewers/microbreweries...
Don't get me wrong I'm not entirely dissagreeing with you on either point, just though you might like to eleborate a bit... (?)

Get you head from up your rectum. There are more car plants representing more manufacturers in the UK than in any other EU country. Many of the problems which the British car industry has faced are because of crap turned out out by two American companies, Ford and General Motors who for generations dominated the market between them. Their contempt for both product quality and the people who worked for them poisoned the whole industry.Manx Guy wrote:Bit of a sweeping statement..... OSB
Don't get me wrong I don't necassarily dissagree with what you are saying.... Maybe you could be a little more sublte...?
I don't think many people could argue with that, certainly not anyone who drove a ford or vauxhall from the 70's or 80's (before the competition raised the game)...
So you're not a fan of Cascade hops or (so called) American IPA's... I'd have thought someone as helpful as yourself would have put aside your opinions and made more constructive suggestions...
My intention is/was not to offend or irritate you - so if I have done either please accept my apologies.
But thats not the purpose of this thread so back to the OP:
You can use any hops you know you like BUT to be trueish to style use traditional style english hops such as Northdown, Fuggle, Challenger and Golding...
As previously stated White shield uses (AFAIK) Challenger and Northdown for bittering with Northdown as a late addition...
Challenger and Goldings also work well together
Hope this helps
