Hi
i was lucky enough to have won a 2can fixby gold ale kit

. any suggestions on the best way to modify it? or should i just follow the instructions, add the hops that come with it and do the brewlength to 20 litres?
i won it from here
linky despite the name of 'compare the beerkit' it actually provides stuff for all types of brewing. it was delivered in double quick time even tho it was a free prize so i can't fault the service. i would reccomend this as a lhbs for anyone local to the area.

Hi KJ,
Nice one- result!
Personally I'd consider reducing the brewlength (as you suggest) and go for some dry hopping in the FV (using your favourite Ale aroma hops)...

thanks guy,
what do you suggest about yeast? ive just come home to find swmbo has moved the kit to resting on the radiator...not sure whether heat exposure will knacker the kit yeast.

Hmmm...
Depends on how hot your radiators get... but why take the chance....?
So many choices yeast wise... I'd go for your personal fav. ale yeast.... But if you want suggestions try Nottingham or S04...
Just make sure that if you go for nottingham its not one of the 'dodgy batches'... search this forum (nottingham recall)...
If the kits been on the radiator long it may darken the extract slightly... but shouldn't effect the flavour...
Good luck & report back!

i use nottingham in my AG brews, not from the bad batch

i have a couple in stock anyway....i was just checking to see whether anyone favoured a particular type for this kit.
i'm sure i can stretch to a packet of yeast seeing as the kit was free!
cheers guy

Fella's thanks for the comments on my "dickinson's tan"
K-J, with regards to the Fixby Gold, i'm one who tends to tinker for the sake of it, however i reigned myself in and did this one as per instructions with a 15 min hop tea bag.
Its been bottled for 6 days in the warm and i "tested" one tonight......"BLOODY LOVELY"....its gonna be really hard to keep my hands of this, fruity hoppy summeryness in a glass, lovely head which lasted to the last mouthful.....very impressed with my first 2 can kit!

I have got a wherry kit and my next planned modified brew is to use one can of the kit plus 1 kilo of DME, 200gms of crystal malt,20grms of styrian goldings hops.
The idea is to tip the contents of the can into the FV,fillthe can with boiling water to rinse out,tip this into a pan with the crystal malt and hops and boil for ten minutes, add to the FV with the DME and top up to 23ltrs.I know this wont be very bitter, what I am trying to brew is something like Fremlings bitter which was not very bitter but had a nice hoppy malty flavour and was brewed here in Kent but has sadly been long gone now after like a lot of local breweries was swallowed up by the big breweries.
Any comments or suggestions about this idea please?

Da Puta Madre Porter
I've got an adapted kit recipe on the go at the moment. Sitting it out waiting in the Secondary FV till I find the time to bottle. Porter inspired by a recipe in one of Graham Wheeler's homebrew books.
3kg (2x) Muntons Mexican Cerveza beer kits
250g Roasted Barley
185g Black Malt
200g Agave Syrup dissolved and boiled in water for 15 mins
I steeped the grains in a pasta pan of pre-boiled and cooled water. Left it on the hob to come to the boil. The moment it boiled, I removed the pan from the heat and drained the contents through a sieve. Didn't sparge if I remember correctly.
Why did I use agave syrup? It was in the cupboard and I thought it would be interesting, especially as it's a Mexican beer kit and agave syrup is a Mexican product. Should have no real impact on flavour though.
Added the contents of both tins to the water in a much larger pan (a 15 litre soup pan). Brought it to a simmer then added to the Primary fermenting vessel. Topped up the FV to 23 litres and left it to sit in a bath of cold water to cool down. When the temperature was at 24°c, I gave it a good stir (5 minutes approx) and added the yeast. Took a while to get going but once it did, it went really well.
It had an extreme coffee flavour all the time that it was in the primary. Like drinking espresso. It mellowed considerably after I moved it to the secondary FV.
Looking forward to bottling this one but no idea how it will taste after it's matured. Hopefully good

Sounds interesting, what yeast did you use? The kit yeast?

I cultured up some Coopers yeast from their Sparkling ale. I've been playing around with this for a while but only had success with Coopers. It's got a fruity aroma. Had I not had success with that, I would have used Safale US-05 which is my 'house' yeast. It gives me good results every time.

Surprisingly, the bitterness is quite subtle. A lot more than the Salem Porter clone I've got sat in the secondary.
The name was my girlfriend's idea. She's half Spanish. Because I used two kits of Mexican Cerveza, she said it seemed appropriate to give it a Spanish name. Yes, it's the whore's mother. Apparently it has the same meaning as 'The dog's b_llocks' and used when something is good. I call it DPM for short.
Still, I've never done this to a lager kit before and can only hope my brew can live up to it's namesake. Bottled yesterday morning. Will give it 2 weeks before I sneak a sample.
