Who has the hardest water?
Who has the hardest water?
My water is pretty darn hard:
Total hardness 266 mg/l as CaCO3
Alkalinity 210 mg/l as CaCO3
Not too surprising I guess, as it comes from a chalk bore-hole (Wessesx Water, Newton Tony).
Does anyone have anything as hard or harder to deal with?
I get great stouts and porters, but pale ales are challenging. Hop utilization seems to suffer. I get through a lot of CRS, as I have found the boiling method to be unpredictable and ineffective. Any tips?

I believe Tilehurst near Reading has the hardest water I've heard about . . . over 300mg/l as CaCO3. . . . That was measured using a Palintest kit so not sure about real accuracy for that one.

Re: Who has the hardest water?
Got a cottage in Ireland and got acid peat on top of limestone. Total hardness was coming out over 600 ppm. Not sure about Calcium hardness as was doing it purely out of interest to see just how hard it was (it scales the kettles up the sides
).
Will have to do a full suite on it as do water treatment and analysis for a job so have full analysis kit at my disposal.

Genius and insanity are but a small step apart. I often feel that I have taken that step.
Re: Who has the hardest water?
280 mg/l CaCO3 here, we're keeping the economy going with all the CRS purchases.

It's 308 CaCO3 here. I've been using bottled for my AG brews.

Not unless you want licked to death...My Alkalinity is 136 & 176 on the hardness scales

Re: Who has the hardest water?
Hardness 266 and alkalinity around the 190-200 level here - another major CRS user (though good to go for Imperial Stouts with only a pinch of gypsum or CaCL2
