Lidl Boiler
Re: Lidl Boiler
nice work rimski, as you say not the most violent of boils but if its rolling like that consistantly i think it would be good enough. Any chance of a few pics of the modification you made to it?
Re: Lidl Boiler
As I said before:
YOU DO NOT NEED TO TAKE IT APART TO TWEAK IT!
It is easy to damage the element. The crimps fall apart and you will need specialists tools to put them back on.
The SS band is a pita to put back.
Please do not even try to take it apart if you are not experienced with electrical goods - if you accidently pull off the earths, you could easily kill yourself.
and
Pry off knob with a blunt flat knife.
Turn collar, just visible inside plastic housing, 45 degrees anti-clock with long nose pliers or similar.

The collar has two notches in it, you can see the red thread locking compound.
Doing it this way will ensure that you still have some protection against serious overheating and you just might not kill yourselves!

Re: Lidl Boiler
Having read Befuggled post I won't post the pictures.
I managed to do the boil fine but I have also now managed to buy a Burco boiler for 50 quid off of Ebay so I have reassembled be Lidl boiler to use it as a mash and sparge water heater.

Re: Lidl Boiler
Sorry, didn't mean to preach.
For some inexplicable reason I was getting very concerned about JBKer's safety!

Re: Lidl Boiler
Can't have JBK'ers getting cooked from their own bodges. The Daily Mail would probably start a campaign to ban homebrew as it is killing people and destroying the 'yoof'.
Because of course minge drinking and waiting 4 weeks for a drink go hand in hand. Then again, when you wait 4 weeks for 5 gallons of wine.... welllll....

Re: Lidl Boiler
That's mine tweaked as per Befuggled's instructions.
I inserted a tiny allen key into each of the gaps in the collar, clamped them to the main dial and they turned very easily.
I compared the temerature to the dial reading from 60 degrees up.
From 60 to 95 degrees on the dial, I was exactly 5 degrees hotter in the pot.
At the start of the "Max" line, it would cut out at 103 and kick back in at 101-102.
Left it flat out for another few minutes and it got up to 104, but if I even partially cover it, I think it'll get another few dregrees in there.
I think this'll do the job nicely, shame I don't know what I'm doing beyond a Coopers kit!

Re: Lidl Boiler
Nice, nice
I'm liking the work that people are putting in to get this to work. Thanks for confirming befuggled's instructions Cain.
Was it a full volume?

Re: Lidl Boiler
I you fill it to 1cm from the top it hold about 26L so it holds 25L perfectly
Re: Lidl Boiler
Is it something out of Star Trek?

Kingons?

An aerial, or a Bat Call Sign?

No! - it's a hop stopper for a Lidl thingywotsit

Re: Lidl Boiler
That's a nice wee additon!
What's the mesh you've used?
Do those pipes just slot together, or are they bonded in some way?
Getting this boiler cheap is what's nudging me away from Coopers kits to making real beer, so this is all new territory for me.
