Burnt Lme On The Boiler Element

Post by malc » Thu Jun 24, 2010 3:09 pm

i have just done my first extract brew today and while adding the Lme i think it has burnt on the boiler element, i think it's the extract as the grains were in a bag which came out ok, and there were no signs of burnt hops after the boil.

does anyone know if the taste would be noticeable in the beer once fermented?
there is a slight burnt/roasted taste before i added it to the fv but i'm not sure if that is because of the grains used,

chrystal malt
dark chrystal malt
chocolate malt

i don't know how this would turn out, i just thought for my first try i would put a few ingredients together and see what happens, then adjust things from there.

any advise would be great,

malc

hi
i don't know if fermentation is different when extract brewing compared to kit brewing but the fv has been going mad. for the past 2 days it had a wicked head on it, it looks like there is much more sediment than when i was brewing kits, is his normal?
it tastes wicked so far and the burnt taste seems to have gone as well. the reading so far is 1.016 from 1.052, and still fermenting, when would be the right time to move to secondary fv as there looks like a lot of sediment i think it will need it.
thanks

I usually rack my beer to the secondary fv after 7 days. I'm not quite so fanatical about that. Sometimes it's 8, sometimes it's 9.
It then sits in the secondary for two weeks or until I find time to bottle. I never keg my beer.

As for sedimentation, it really does vary as does yeast activity. From your description, everything sounds just fine

Cheers

do you need to add anything when moving to secondary or would it just carry on fermenting?
thanks

You don't need anything for the second fermentation except clean and sterile equipment.
There should still be yeast in suspension to complete the fermentation process. However the fermentation is not anywhere near as active as the primary stage so don't worry if it seems to be a lot quieter than in the beginning.
